do you take all medication before having an MRI?

Posted by iforgotmypassword on June 19, 2006, at 16:57:34

this is of the head/brain. i take minocycline, for possible neurolyme, and oral transgender hormone repacement meds. would any of these screw up or otherwise affect readings?

i also tend to take some cholinergic supplements, and have just recently had some caffeine (the scan is in 4 hours). i take things like galantamine, piracetam, alphaGPC/choline alfoscreate... i am not taking them at the moment though... so that should not be a problem?

i also am very hungry and want to eat lots of food. is this a problem, and is there any food i should avoid? i tend to be very affected by starches and blood sugar i suspect.

You can eat whatever you want before an MRI of the brain. I've had three. Love Phillipa

If there is a problem with your medications, they would have told you I would think. I was told I could take all my medications, and there was no restriction on eating. I have had one brain MRI, four of neck, two of upper back and never had a problem. Just recently had one of neck and upper back. My concern was plate and pins in my neck, but type of metal used makes it not a problem. Any food, I think, is fine as well. The most recent MRI of neck was with contrast, and still it was okay to eat anything. Only when I have had a CT scan of my lungs (with contrast) am I told no food for four to six hours prior. Talk to the MRI folks ahead of time if you are concerned.
