I have not frequented this board for quite a while but used to rely on it and was helped immensely. Have I missed discussion on the posibility of Xanax XR replacing Klonopin? Originally I was taken off xanax because it was short acting and placed on Klonopin because it was long acting and was told that I should probably take it for the rest of my life. But I remember my psychiatrist saying that xanax had anti-depressant properties for some people whereas klonopin could cause more depression. My psychiatrist retired, I moved, and my GP prefers SSRIs. I'm looking for updated info. Thanks, Jane

I tried the switch when the extended release Xanax first hit the market. I did not find the same level of anxiety symptom relief and went back to K. I was monotherapy on a benzo at the time and found use of an AD with K took care of any depressive symptoms. Actually, the AD took care of the anxiety problem too and I rarely use Klonopin at this time.
I'm not much help but that's my trying the switch experience.

I've taken regular xanax it's true there are antidepressive properties in it. But the XR version a lot of people still need to take the regular xanax with it. It doesn't work as well. And we're all different as klonopin depressed me. Love phillipa

>Hi Jane,
Lexapro. It's been really good stuff for me and this was after some failed and some impressively yucky startups with other SSRI's.
I only did Prozac very briefly, so personally, I don't think I could say much about its effect on anxiety. Over the years, there have been mixed reports from others I've noted here. We are all so different.
Lex has been good to me. Using Klonopin during the startup was helpful as, by far, the biggest untoward startup effect for me was a big upramp of the anxiety symptoms. After a few weeks, this gradually abated and I've gotten excellent control of the toxic life freezing anxiety, which is wonderful.
Best,
Glydin

I just tried a Klonopin-to-Xanax XR switch for the second time. It's strange, but it is as though XR is a different drug than Xanax immediate relief-I definately get an antidepressant effect from Xanax ER, but I find XR weak and somewhat depressing. I find Klonopin depressing, too, but don't have a good substitute...
