Are mood stabilizers meant more to control mania than to help lift depression?

I honestly believe the individual determines that. It isn't a magic formula that addresses what is imbalanced. If you run a more manic line than depressive, I believe you will "feel" less manic symptoms than depressive, and vice versa. It is very common for Lamictal to be used in combination with anther med to acquire the desired balance.

Phillipa, I'm doing the Lamictal thing too. I'm 3 weeks into it now and am hoping for the antidepressent properties to kick in. It's the only one that I've heard of that is suppose to be good for the depression part of bipolar. My depression is severe whereas my so called mania isn't that bad. Actually for me, I love it because it's the only time I feel good. Lithium and Depaote actually made my depression worse and the doctor stopped them. Yeah, they took away the mania, but left me with nothing but very bad depression. I've been wondering if a mood stablizer is really the right thing for me until I started the Lamictal. I'm crossing my fingers. It would be nice to not have my moods up and down all day for no reason, but it would be nice to feel good and feel love too sometime. I'm wondering if there is a drug that allows you to have your cake and eat it too.
