I've tried paxil and lexapro with no results. Not even side effects. My doctor wants to try zoloft before going to other options. Is this worth a shot in anybody's opinion. He says that a lot of people out there say if you've tried one SSRI, you've tried them all, but that that's not true.
Has anybody failed to respond to one or more SSRI's, and done well on another>?

I failed a couple SSRI's and I am about to switch from the current problem with Lexapro to Zoloft. So I am in your same shoes and curious to what others say to your post.
It is my understanding that in the recent STAR*D large clinical study, they found the switching to another SSRI has about the same chance of producing a response as augmenting the not working SSRI with wellbutrin or buspar, and the about the same as switching to a totally different class of antidepressant.
The biggest advantage to switching between SSRI's is the ease of doing it. Generally, you don't have to tapper the dose of the first med and you can just stop the old SSRI one day and the next start the new SSRI. That is a lot easier than fooling around with med combos or washing out of a med before trying something like Emsam. Please keep us posted on what you decide and how it goes.

Paxil worked wonderfully for me, but the weight gain and sexual dysfunction caused me to have to get off of it. Celexa pooped out on me. I'm on Prozac now, and it's the first SSRI that just hasn't done anything good for me. I'm having to take klonopin everyday, and in my opinion, that means the prozac doesn't work. So different SSRIs do indeed do different things. I'm about to call my doc and ask to try Zoloft (since prozac isn't even approved for anxiety disorder!!!) because this prozac just ain't happenin' for me. There are similarities in some SSRIs, so like, if Prozac doesn't work, then it is likely that Luvox won't work either. Wikipedia actually has some awesome information that allows a person to compare and contrast the SSRIs.

Hope that is helpful!

Zoloft was a total bust for me (two times; two docs-it was the time that Zoloft was always the first SSRI doc's would prescribe, no matter what), but Paxil was literally life-changing. I hear similar stories in my support group about SSRI's. My opinion is that the SSRI's are so safe, they are worth exhausting before trying other AD's. The side effects, including sexual, seem to be really individual and not predictable in any useful way.

I've heard after three the chances of one working for you are almost nil. Love Phillipa
