Hi, I have been diagnosed with spectrum bi-polar and was recently put on Lamictal. I am very med / ad sensitive and I just couldnt handle the anxiety that Lamictal produced for me. I know I am atipical but I guess I must live with that. Has anyone had any luck on other mood stabalizers that don't have an anti-depressant effect. I am currently on 3.5 mg of klonopin for anxiety spread out throughout the day, 300 mg of effexor for depression and 450mg of pregabalin to help with anxiety. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. I have been thinking about depakote. thanks!

Hi Speakez,
I would like you to know that I also am bipolar spectrum and lamictal caused strong anxiety for me as well... you are not atypical as this is not an uncommon occurence.. I've moved on to other mood stabilizers, such as depakote, with success...

Of the mood stabilizers I have tried...lamictal, depakote, lithium...I liked depakote the best. Especially if there are anxiety issues. By itself maybe it wasn't quite enough anti-anxiety, but it seemed to boost the effectiveness of other anti-anxiety meds for me, so much so that I was able to cut my zyprexa dose in half and I was able to wean off xanax completely.
The extended release version of depakote is the best way to go I think, in terms of minimizing side effects and keeping a steady blood level. Side effects were actually pretty nill for me, with some weight gain and some mild cognitive dulling being the only ones. The anti-anxiety part of it was apparent to me about 4 hours after my first dose. It didn't really take full effect for about 6 days.

Interesting as I just started very dose lamictal no more anxiety than before. I'm splitting even this small dose but seriously it's not increasing my anxiety. Love Phillipa
