Lamictal/Depakote ER combo and low dosing

Posted by psychosage on May 23, 2006, at 15:11:27

Anyone on this combo? Are there any of you who have been successful on low-dose Depakote? What is the lowest before the side effects get bad? Does Lamictal compensate for the sedation from Depakote?

I've been on 500mg depakote extended release. It was pretty mild at that dose. I think most of the side effects such as sedation or confusion are mostly at higher doses.

If your doc didn't inform you, it is extremely important with this combo to keep the lamictal dosage cut in half. That's because depakote will double the halflife of lamictal. The risk of rash is increased with the combination, primarily because of depakote increasing the lamictal blood levels if you aren't aware of it. For example, if you were taking depakote and shooting for a goal of 100mg lamictal, then you would actually only take 50mg to hit that goal.

I am not on depakote yet, but I am interested because of my mixed moods and a bad episode I had on Saturday.
How did you get yourself on such a low dose?

Right now I am just on Lamictal, and I have been on 25mg for two weeks.

Nevermind, I saw the pdoc today, and there will be no changes since I just started Lamictal.
