I think I have tried about every med in the pharmacy. If you have had a history of sleeping problems, I want to suggest Seroquel. It is an AP, but now pdocs are using it to treat anxiety and sleep problems.
It is hard for me to imagine anybody taking Seroquel and not being knocked out like Rip Van Winkle. And taking the lowest dose, which is 25mg. Of course, this would be taking Seroquel exclusively. Interaction with other meds could alter the effect of Seroquel, I don't know.

Michael all I know is they tried seroquel in the hospital with me. First 25mg they were determined to make me sleep through the night. That with ambien, xanax and chloral hydrate all being adjusted at the same time. Hummm maybe that was the problem. As no matter how high the dose in four hours I was awake and the dose was repeated. In the am my BP waa so low and I couldn't form words that I had to be helped back to bed and they discontinued the med that day. Love Phillipa

I know this has probably been covered, but where does Seroquel fall in the weight gain category? I was on Zyprexa and 35lb later got off. I have no weight gain now with Geodon but I am considering a differect anti-psychotic.

I am sure someone on this board knows more, but I heard you are far more likely to gain weight on Zyprexa than Seroquel. I did gain weight on Seroquel (20 lbs.), but that was because I was tired and didn't feel like working out like normally. There is always a trade-off, you know?

That your blood pressure was low was understandable. Seroquel causes orthostatic hypotension, or low blood pressure. If take it and wait around for a few hours instead of climbing into bed, if I go upstairs to bed, its a fight against a slight fainting feeling which, well as a man using the restroom at that moment, I have to sit down or I could fall over. And this is at 1000mg -- same effect at 400 or 800. Trazodone has the same effect.
As to weight gain -- Seroquel does not have nearly the liability of messing around with your lipid (cholesterol) profile as Zyprexa, but it too can cause weight gain through its sheer soporific effect which tends to dampen people's natural instincts to go and excercise. Not to say that it is anyone's fault. Seroquel can cause weight gain in and of itself, but it does not cause it of itself as Zyprexa does. These of course vary from individual to individual. Geodon makes me very jumpy from akathisia -- some people find it very sedating, so individual results with atypical neuroleptics are very different.
