Is 2.5 mg really enough? Sounds like a low mg to me. I really don't know. What os a high mg.
How long does it usually take to take effect. (Shortest time: I react very quickly to meds.)Pdoc offered Seroquel or Zyprexa. I guess I just flipped a coin. We'll see what happens.
Take care everyone.

Hi-
I was on Zyprexa for over a year at 2.5 mg. Tried 3x to go off but it was hell for me (not always true for everyone). Sooooo, I weaned myself off by going to 1.25 for about 6 months, then cut that in half for another month and then literally took a speck for a few weeks more. With Lorazepam as a calming agent I was able to get off Zyprexa (and am now on Geodon). Anyway, that's not your question. Yes, 2.5 was plenty for me, even the 1.25 worked wonders. I only went off because for me the weigth gain was high.

2.5mg zyprexa is a pretty low dose, but the stuff is pretty powerful. The usual starting dose is actually 5mg and then 10mg is common. 20mg is the high end, but my pdoc says some patients take 30mg or 40mg.
I was on 5mg for several years. A few things to keep in mind. Antipsychotics are very hard to wean off of. Sedation at first can feel strong. Good for sleep. Any daytime grogginess should go away in a few weeks. Weight gain is common. My weight gain went away all by itself in about a year.
I was on 5mg for several years. Weaned off over 4 months (hard!), went 3 months med-free (hard!) and am back on 2.5mg but it doesn't feel like much.

Actually Phillipa my doctor says I need a lot more. She wants me on 10mg. I might go for 5mg. I just am so afraid of increasing the dose because I know from experience how terrifying it is to decrease the dose later on if you have to for some reason.
2.5mg has helped to quiet my tinnitus some. It helps me sleep. Appetite is a little better. It helps mood a little bit but not nearly enough. It is only good for anxiety from 2 hours to 8 hours after I take it.
When I took st johns wort with it and experienced a 300% increase in zyprexa blood levels (though I didn't know that at the time), I did have a profoundly improved mood with total calm and peace and motivation. Looking back I'm wondering if it was more the sjw doing that or the high zyprexa dose. Considering how powerful zyprexa is, I wonder if sjw really had anything to do with it at all other than raising zyprexa blood levels.
So to answer your question, no it is not enough, it works a little bit, but I either need more or something else to go with it.

understand the sleeping thing. the first time i was put on it i slept most of the first two days. i was on 10. it seemed to work wonders for me.
the sleepyness will subside and if it helps your sx half as well as it helped mine it's worth the few weeks of groggyness.
also i recently withdrew from 10 of zyprexa and had no major withdrawl sx or side effects. it took about one month to taper down/off.
just an fyi.i'd say if your symptoms are bad please at least give it a couple weeks.
however if it is just too intolerable, let your pdoc know.best wishes

This drug can be a real effective and ultra powerful mood booster, in my opinion. But it gave me mild halllucinations that didn't go away, like wavy floor, phantom smells, and feeling around but not in my body. (Weird feeling for an athelete like me...) All I took was 2.5 1x per day and that was a knock out. Talking of 10-20 mg floors me. Sounds like a great way to become a fat sleeping zombie! All I wanted to do on my 2.5 was voraciously eat and sleep. I felt too "heavy" to walk or excercise or do anything esle. I gained a lot of weight very very fast, and later read that the drug is linked with diabetes development. It actually adjusts something with one's glucose processing and metabolism!!! I think there is even a class-action lawsuit about this, but I'm not sure what happened there. So, I'd treat this drug with care, and if at all possible, stay clear from a long term use-unless you are a lucky person who can tolerate it. But even then I think you'd do good to keep an eye on your blood sugar.

Just wanted to add, this was so effective for my mood, I wish it didn't have such strong other effects on me which ultimately more than negated the benefits. Tragic. If it works for you- wow, I am envious.
