Neurontin - bleh

Posted by ClearSkies on April 23, 2006, at 21:38:40

I did not last long on this! Prescribed for anxiety, and sure enough, it caused a whacking case of it. Incredibly uncomfortable bloating; so bad I couldn't get my rings off all of a sudden, and *none* of my clothes fit, within 2 weeks. I stopped taking it 3 days ago and my water level is still dropping, thank goodness.

Plus, neurontin really did not have any effect on my anxiety. Except to make it worse as my self esteem can already be compared to the stuff you have to scrape off the bottom of your shoe.

I'm sorry Clear Skies. I can understand why wouldn't want to use a benzo but wasn't campral helping with your anxiety too? Love Phillipa

My Campral dosage has been tapered down from 6 tablets a day to 1. Although it helped me hugely with my alcohol cravings and the anxiety about it, eventually it caused me to develop confusion and poor short term memory (which caused its own anxiety!).

So, benzo-free - no Ambien either - and not sleeping. The anxiety is nowhere near as fierce as it once was, but so far I have not had complete relief. I am certain that the bottom of it is rooted in my abysmal self esteem, and I realize that I've lived with it for most of my life, starting from early childhood. That's quite a chemical groove to have in your brain, you know?

Maybe I have to knuckle down and admit that I'll never find complete relief; maybe I should be grateful instead that in trying to treat it, I've become sober.

I would think that being sober is a HUGE thing! Meds might not make you 100% but maybe you can still get better. Why no more Ambien?

Neurontin seemed to work at first for me but after a couple weeks I *needed* to take it whenever it began to wear off. I would get real jittery before the next dose. It took me several weeks and a few attempts to get off the stuff.

And yes, there was a kind of bloated feeling that led to its own kind of anxiety - a feeling like I had left my stomach on the roller coaster.

Ptui! Neurontin.

The Ambien just wasn't working any more after taking it for 2 years, and I was getting more anxious about not being able to fall asleep.
We were going for a double whammy with the supposed sedating and antianxiety properties of Neurontin. Sadly, it had neither.

CS,

I found that if I stopped Ambien for two or three days then started it back, it would start working again. At worst give in a week or two off and try it again. I have been on Ambien on and off for most of the last 10 years.

Likewise I have been on and off Ambien up to 20mg for 10 years -- not as an experiment but you may have a point there.

My doctor gave me Neurontin because it would be "better for me than Klonopin". Phooey ! I took the whole bottle and gave it an American Standard funeral. Goodbye Neurontin !

It works for many...I tried it hated it. Lyrica has replaced (not FDA aprproved yet for GAD)it and is more potent. Removes deppresion but the stimulitive effect and cognitive probs were side effects I could not handle. It is working well for some. Trial process is a long one to find the right med or combo. Good luck.

Lyrica is still in uncharted waters as I've posted later, and is also marketed at the same time as Neurontin is still, by Pfizer. It has more side effects.
