Diazepam Tablet Size

Posted by Sobriquet Style on April 23, 2006, at 9:58:18

I've been prescribed 2mg tablets to take as needed for a starting dosage. However my doctor says I can if I feel the need, have this dosage increased. Fair enough I guess, start with the minimum and work up from their if I want too.

So far I've used 3 x 2mg, for a total of 6mg - and found that I think this maybe my sweet spot. This was taking the tablets spread out during the day.

I'm wondering if its worth my while getting the pills changed to 5mg tablets. Then I could just take one and that should do the job. Also I could break the tablet in half if I wanted a smaller dosage and take the other half if I needed to..

On the other hand I could take 5mg at once using the 2mg pills. (take 2 and break the other in half) And with 2mg tablets I have more flexibility in some respects. eg spread out the dosage for a smoother effect..

Not sure what to do?

Hi!

Glad to hear things are going well so far:)

>Not sure what to do?

I don't think it matters too much which route you take :) Taking 2.5mg (1/2 a 5mg tab) twice a day might work out cheaper I suppose!

Agree get the largest size and split them the less pills the less money. I always have my doc precribe the highest dose and break them. Love Phillipa ps that is a very low dose

As diazepam is a cheap generic medication (or it is here in .au anyway), the 2mg tablets will give you maximum flexibility with little increased cost per mg. Most recommendations are to take it three times a day for anxiety, I suspect this recommendation is based on experience and is not simply made up. As you said, you think you found your sweet spot.

You're right. I guess in some respects it justs comes down to convenience. I don't really mind taking the 2mg 3 times a day. And lol i'll get a whole extra 'mg'! I'm going to wait and see for the next time I need to use them and then try 5mg in one go. I think one of the advantages of using the 2mg pills is I can spread out the dosage quite equally. Along with the gabapentin I take that can benefit because of overall less sedation.

I'll wait and see how it pans out..

Decisions, decisions.. lol

>ps that is a very low dose

You're right. Probably the lowest effective dosage I think. It seems to work for me though. I think if I took much more I would feel to tired/sedated and not have more benefit for anxiety.

My thinking is as well, keeping the dosage low and using it only when absolutely necessary, I should avoid any tolerance issues. I think the Neurontin enables me to keep the dosage low too because that works well for anxiety for me..

Thats very true. As its so cheap the cost differences are very little.

Taking it 3 times a day did make me feel it was a smoother feeling...With the benefits of less sedation too.

You're right :-)

Hi SS

If you're taking it PRN, it's best to take it three times a day. If you start taking it regularly, a single daily dose should be fine. Diazepam only has a long duration of action after repeated doses, hence the need to take it three times a day if you're using it PRN. People who take diazepam every day for a few weeks or more usually find that they can take the entire dose at once, usually in the evening.

Regards

Ed

That makes sense with my findings/effects so far..

Thanks for the information :-)
