Hi guys,
Just went on the generic fluvoxamine a couple of days ago after 9 years of Luvox.
Was wondering if I should anticipate a difference, or is what the pharmacists say about there being no difference really true?
Thanks a bunch.

I'm been on both at different times and for me they are the only SSRI's I can tolerate but unfortunately they do not relieve depression for me still on it though. Can I ask how much you take, if it works, and what you take it for. Thanks Love Phillipa

they still make luvox here (Australia) and generic. While I was taking it I was switched from generic fluvoxamine to Luvox on may occasions and it made absolutely no difference to me at all. Paul

> Thanks a bunch.Luvox was discontinued by Solvay effective Sept 2003 and is no longer manufactured or distributed for the US Market. There was no particular explanation, but it had nothing to do with any dangers faced by the drug according to the FDA. It was probably purely a marketing strategy. It appears to be continued to be manufactured by Solvay for the Canadian, Japanese, and other markets.
In the US, it is generic by Eon, as well as probably other companies that filed ANDAs in 2003.
At the time I was taking Luvox, it was switching over to generic. I noticed no difference in efficacy. I find it to be a very good drug for OCD and it wasn't necessarily just that it was studied for that purpose. It has such a wide dosage range that a generic would not be noticed all that much, though for fairly strong cases, at least the noted maximum of 300 if not 400+/day in two doses may be needed.

Hi Yxi
We still have branded fluvoxamine in the UK too. It's called Faverin here.

I think it's approved for depression everywhere apart from the US! It was studied in depression and found to be effective.

PS. Same with clomipramine (Anafranil). Clomipramine is clearly a very effective antidepressant, and it approved for depression most places apart from the US!

Yup OCD here. With more side effects than luvox. I wanted to write with the cast on day before yesterday and then Greg trimmed it so I could at least type Solvay took it off the market due to some paperwork thing. And didn't persue the necessary paperwork to resolve it. So now just generic. Not used very often here. Love PJ O ps I was awake all night the horrible pain in the arm from typing and percocet didn't work.

I tried Anafranil for OCD for a few weeks, and the side effects were intolerable. Dry mouth, felt out of it, and had a few instances where someone was talking to me and all of a sudden, I couldn't hear/ understand what they were saying.
I tried Luvox for only one day, and felt weird. Does it work, because I've tried just about everything else, and on Remeron and Wellbutrin, I had the worst OCD I've ever had, where, when I'd take a walk, I had to read off the license plate of every car I saw. Since I live in L.A., you can imagine how time consuming this would be.
Thankfully, I have the willpower to resist some of the more ridiculous compulsions like that to the point where they'll calm down a bit, but I still have a bunch of stupid rituals that are using up time better spent in other pursuits.
I would be interested in what others here have experienced with OCD meds. Thanks.

I'm on low dose luvox the only ad I can tolerate. Been up as high as 250mg. The only one that seems to work on OCD. I relate to the license plate thing. When my anxiety is high I add up the numbers and assign a numerical to the letters A=l B=2 etc. I will probably raise the dose again at 50 supposed to be at l50mg now. But gratefully no more cast or pain. Time to concentrate on the psych thing. Love Phillipa

Yes -- at least for me, it stopped me obsessing about meds 16 hours a day and my condition, a sort of OCD over an Somatiform/OC like disorder, circular in a way. I found it the most effective of SSRIs I tried for OCD, perhaps because it is also the most sedating and least anxiety provoking. For serious cases or people like me who metabolize things like crazy, you have to go above the recommended 300 to 400 or 450 if can be tolerated. That of course is up to your doctor. The medication has a wide dosage range. But one day definately isn't enough. The half life isn't even there. It is guaranteed with any SSRIs that you will feel "wierd" or something the first time, because of transmitter adjustments. One has to stick it out a little more, several weeks to a month at least, I mean, unless one has a serious/allergic reaction to a drug or the like.
This is the end of the thread.
