OCD and autism

Posted by Mandy on April 3, 2006, at 12:21:40

My daughter is 37 and has classic autism with OCD. We found that Tegretol really calmed her OCD but Dr was afraid that 11 was a toxic level. He took her off and OCD really increased. Does anyone know what are toxic levels? And anyone familiar with what other drugs might work well with autism and OCD. Thanks

i have a 21 year old brother who is autistic. He has OCD as well, as it seems that most individuals with this condition do. I also work with adults with autism as a caregiver.

I know alot of them take Risperdal and this seems to help to certain degrees. All the drugs indicated for OCD are good==Luvox, Zoloft and Anafranil seems to be most popular for adults with autism, in my experience. My Brother takes Paxil but it doesnt seem to help much. Tegretol (Carbamazepine) is also often taken for behavioral problems but i suppose it can help OCD as well. If her OCD is worse now that she is off it-then chances are, it was working and might need to get back on it. Not sure about toxic levels of the drug. There are other versions of the drug you can ask about. I think there is something called equatro or something like that. This drug is like an updated version used for bipolar mania. Other people in this forum might be able to help more.

Has he tried SSRIs? What about Trileptal? Just curious. I don't the answer to your question re: blood levels but I wonder if he could benefit from a lower dose of Tegretol that wasn't supposedly toxic.
