Hey Matt, I was just thinking. Strattera is good for ADD and it's not a stimulant. Also the tricyclic antidepressant Desipramine is suppose to help as well.
I also think you should really be in therapy. Can't solve everything with a pill. And it sounds like you probably have a lot of issues to deal with surrounding your mom.

You stated earlier that you were Matt's adopted 2Mom. In reviewing your post, you advise him on a regular basis. Additionally, it is clear that Matt has been at this web-site for numerous years. What's the situation?

A lot of us have tried in vain to get Matt to leave the house, stay with a friend, or at school. And she threatens him with taking his insurnace away. We constantly we meaning the babble community that he is l8 now and can go by himself and find some sort ot assistance to pay for his visits and meds. Please if you could offer some other advise please do. Love Phillipa

Matt,
It may very well be due to ADHD that you feel more stable on a stimulant. Kids with ADHD can actually suffer from not enough stimulation. I know it seems counter-intuitive. But that's how stimulants help those kids who truly have ADHD. It provides just enough additional stimulation that they can settle down. You might want to think about going for an assessment, including neuropsychological testing specific for ADHD. ADHD symptoms can continue into adulthood, and many adults with ADHD continue to benefit from taking stimulant medications under the direction of their doctor.
I started taking Provigil recently for my own ADHD symptoms. It's helping some. I'm not as impulsive in my behavior or in speaking. I do wonder how I'd do on Adderall or Ritalin, but I can't take those with Nardil.
Given the symptoms you've described over the last year or so, I think it might be really helpful to get a diagnostic psychological assessment, which can confirm ADHD and help your doc with coming up with the most effective treatment. Perhaps it might also help your mother to better understand you. An accurate diagnosis can go a long way towards this.
Good luck.

I agree. Stimulants are routinely used to calm down people with ADHD (the H does stand for hyperactive, after all). If stimulants make you feel more stable, that would be a strong indication that you suffer from ADHD. And if you do have ADHD, tranquilizers could potentially generate a sense of frustration, as if you were constantly being blocked - so rather than stabilizing you, they might do the reverse. If you haven't been checked for this - by someone truly competent and experienced with adult ADHD - I think it would be worth your while.
This is the end of the thread.
