EMSAM==Who's going to try it and why?

Posted by RobertDavid on April 1, 2006, at 15:41:57

I have generalized social anxiety with mild depression. My doc is optimistic EMSAM will help. This will be my first try at an MAOI.

Just wondering who else is going to try it when it comes out later this month. What's your diagnosis and thoughts?

Rob

In all likelihood I'll be trying it. I haven't really discussed it will my doctor but I'm taking the tablets now and it would seem stupid not to try the patch later this month. I think bypassing the stomach is a huge advantage. Its sort of like the diabetics who uses the pump and can much more easily regulate their blood sugar. So although its not a direct comparison I like to think the patch will help regulate my moods in addition to just elevating them. In terms of diagnosis I'm going on 6 years of depression/dysthmia. Now I swing on a day to day basis from dysthmia to feelings of worthlessness, but almost never suicide. In the early years of this I had some very strong social anxiety, but I would never say phobia. Much of the social anxiety is behind me, but depression and cognitive trouble has been here to stay. I'm hopeful about the patch and if thats not the ticket maybe parnate will be.

I'm definately hoping for cognative improvement, an increase in energy, some relief for my dysthmia. Any additional benefits I may get for my social anxiety would be welcomed.

My doc what's me to continue to take klonopin for several months, then perhaps try a slow taper and see if EMSAM will will work as mono therapy. But if not, a blend of the two might be the answer. I'm really looking forward to giving it a go. I too will try either Parnate or Nardil if I don't respond well. There's always hope!

Exact same reason as yourself, believe it or not (social anxiety w/ dysthymia). As for my thoughts, when I look at transdermal active ingredient concentration, and metabolite concentrations, there's reason to believe this may offer greater benefit then oral tablet or liquid forms. The reason I don't like the liquid verson as much is because of the cyclic feeling, since it does help in spurts.
