i stsrted on 225 mg. effexor xr about 2 weeks ago after slightly more than 10 years of paxil. the paxil had long ago quit working, but nobody else cared so why should i? a friend made me promise to talk to my doc about my meds, and he switched me to effecor xr. so far no difference than before the change. Anyone else had a direct switch from an ssri, and what was the outcome? (only other psych drug i take is trazadone for ocd and to help me sleep.)

Hi,
I was never on paxil, but actually have a question for you. I recently have been put on Effexor XR 37.5 and have seen a change since day 1.
Is Effexor an SNRI and what is the difference between that and an SSRI?
Thanks> i stsrted on 225 mg. effexor xr about 2 weeks ago after slightly more than 10 years of paxil. the paxil had long ago quit working, but nobody else cared so why should i? a friend made me promise to talk to my doc about my meds, and he switched me to effecor xr. so far no difference than before the change. >An SSRI only works on seratonin in the brain, while an SNRI works on both seratonin and norepinephrine. My doc (whom i think is a quack but may be somewhat right this time) thinks i may have developed a tolerance to the ssri alone...

For some reason that comment "My doc (whom i think is a quack but may be somewhat right this time)" really made me laugh. I can identify with it since my last internist was so lame. But I switched and am extremely happy with the new one.
It's correct that Effexor affects serotonin at lower doses, then also affects non-ep at higher doses.
But docs don't know which of the 2 effects is more important. Even with SSRI's, docs know that they affect serotonin, but they don't know how this works to alleviate anxiety and/or depression.
But the bottom line is that both types of drugs are very effective with very minimal dangerous side effects.
Effexor is generally demonstrated to be a bit more effective than SSRI's in clinical trials. It's a very popular drug with docs since it usually works so well for both anxiety and depression. But you have to give it a couple of weeks to work to give it a fair trial.

I am on Wellbutrin 300XL and Effexor 37.5XR, as well as Klonopin. Has anyone had to reduce/get off of Wellbutrin, since Wellbutrin has properties of a stimulant, which may keep anxiety around? And what was the replacement of Wellbutrin?(Keeping in mind Wellbutrin is one of the few anti-depressants that has a low % of sexual side effects).
Thanks much

It has been at least a couple of weeks, and i still feel the same. I guess part of why i feel so frustrated is because so many people here are saying how much better they feel/felt at such a lower dosage. But i still feel like pulling a hole closed over me (and nobody would care or even notice) and absolutely everything sets me off. I never used to be short-tempered, and i hate it.
This is the end of the thread.
