Amantadine for ADHD?

Posted by KaraS on December 7, 2005, at 21:30:42

According to Edward M. Hallowell, M.D., in his book "Delivered from Distraction", Amantadine is being successfully used on children by two doctors in the Boston area. These doctors, William Singer and Roger Cohen, have supposedly treated four hundred patients with Amantadine (as of the time this book went to print) and obtained "excellent results" with it. They say that they have succeeded where others have failed because they started the medication at very low dosages and built up gradually.

I wonder why they've only tried this in children. I can't see why this wouldn't work for adults with ADHD as well. Has anyone here used Amantadine for this purpose or known of someone who has?

Amantadine for ADHD? Good question! no answers

Hey Kara

I have also wondered about the use of Amantadine for adult ADHD.
One poster on this board said it felt more dopermanagic than Ritalin(!)

Its one of those meds thats really interesting but few people have any experience of.

I'm not sure if theres a good reason for this or if its just not used much......

I've seen studies were Amantadine was used to augment ADs.

Unfortunatly I've never tried it, and doubt there's anyone now posting who has (sigh)

Perhapse the best way to find out would be to trial it yourself?
Would you doc agree to this?

Sorry I can't be more helpful

A few babblers have tried amantadine. Banga and SLS come to mind.

Hi Phillipa,

It's a dopaminergic medication that is used mostly for Parkinson's patients. It also has anti-viral properties. According to Scott's chart it's also used for depression and to treat AP induced EPS.

I've never heard of it being used for ADD though until I read the book I mentioned above. I think I'd like to try it for that.

Hi,

Thanks for your input. So you had heard of amantadine being used for ADD... Had you read the book I mentioned or did you hear of it elsewhere?

I had been mildly interested in it for depression but now I'm very interested in trying it for ADD as well as depression. I just started a new job so I won't be trying any medications for a few months but after that I'll see if either of my last two pdocs will go for it. I'll post the results if I get to trial it.

Hi Kara,
It's good to see you. I haven't seen you around here lately. I haven't been around as much as usual due to various reasons, including computer problems.

I was wondering how you've been. Congratulations on the new job!

Thanks for asking. It's been a challenging first week at work. Almost everything that could go wrong has, including my cat having a reaction to a shot, my bedroom wall being knocked down to install a new pipe, a power outage, me getting the flu. It goes on but I'll spare you the rest of it. The job itself is stressful enough. Not sure what I've gotten myself into and I'm definitely not on enough medication to handle it all.

How are you doing? Are your computer problems fixed?

What do you think about using Amantadine for ADD? Is it something you'd consider trying or did you just use amphetamines for depression/motivation?

K

Hi Kara,
It's great to see you. What a week you've had! I hope you're recovering from the flu.

I know very little about Amamtadine, but I'm always open to new possibilities (if only my body could handle them!). I will read up on Amantadine.

Are you still on Dexedrine? If so , how are you doing? And did you stop taking Doxepin? I think you were also taking a blood pressure medicine. I'm sorry I can't remember all the details now. I've had a very hectic fall.

My computer is still ailing, and I'm currently using someone else's computer. I'm so annoyed that I have to buy another computer very soon.

I'm sorry to hear you had such a difficult week, but it sounds as if you're coping as best as you can.

Sarah

Do you mind if I ask, what is Scott's chart?
