hypomania from ssri

Posted by ghuber on December 2, 2005, at 10:37:37

Has anyone ever dealt with hypomania induced by an SSRI like Celexa? If so, how did you feel? After experiencing this did your pdoc revise your diagnosis to include Bipolar disorder?

I experienced more of a panic-like activation from celexa. One doctor changed my diagnosis, but I knew it was the drug and not me, so I saw another doctor, and reduced the dose on my own.

Interesting. I have been taking a very small dosage of an Celexa (2.5mg) and over the past year have been unable to increase in dosage. Each time I try to, the syndrome I decide below becomes overwhelming and I end up reducing my dosage.

Heres what I've been dealing with -- Something occurs (A thought, something someone says) that would normally not make me happy, and for some odd reason it makes me so happy I want to cry tears of joy. Also, there are times that for whatever reason I just feel overly happy and talkative and can't stop smiling. I'm not sure if I have any other symptoms, those are the ones the bug me the most.

I've complained to my pdoc about this many times because I do not think it is correct for me to be feeling this way. It's sorta strange to break out in a huge smile when whatever it is I am talking about with someone isn't something that should make me react in this way.

Today he finally said he feels this maybe hypomania induced by the Celexa and spoke briefly about the possibility I maybe Bipolar.

I'm making a small spreadsheet that details the way I feel each day for the next month.

Any thoughts anyone??

I'm kind of iffy on considering drug-induced (hypo)manic behavior bipolar disorder. Lots of drugs can cause psychiatric ill effects (especially psychiatric drugs, obviously)...it just doesn't make sense that repsonse to antidepressants can "unmask" bipolar, or whatever the idea is now. That's kind of like saying that meth addicts who go psychotic are "really" schizophrenic or otherwise suffering from a psychotic disorder and the meth simply "unmasked" it. Its just not true.

You might be well served by just switching to something else. Wellbutrin seems pretty good for bipolars, and it seems to induce fewer (hypo)manic reactions overall, so that might be a good med to try. You could also try Lamictal instead of an antidepressant, Symbyax, stimulants, or see if something like an ssri+buspar combo helped...the buspar could boost the AD while dampening some of the sertonin effects, which could maybe allow you to take the AD without going crazy. Good luck!

Did you say it was true bipolar or med induced? Fondly, Phillipa

I don't know, I have never been diagnosed with Bipolar disorder, just major depression and OCD. I mainly take the SSRI for OCD.

I too do not know if I agree with the notion that one is Bipolar just because they become hypomanic on a SSRI AD. They define these types of people as having Bipolar III or IV.
