Talk about...BuSpar

Posted by med_empowered on November 21, 2005, at 2:55:09

OK. I used to take BuSpar, and it worked OK--not on panic attacks, but on overall anxiety. Then it stopped working, uppping the dose didn't help, etc. Also, I kind of remember after being on it for a while that I had this weird sense of un-ease, kind of like you'd get on a neuroleptic, but at a much smaller level. Do you think BuSpar is kind of like an atypical neuroleptic, but one with anti-anxiety rather than anti-psychotic properties? I just cant figure this medication out.

i think there may be some slight D2 antagonism with that drug. might be noticable when the dosage is upped.

Above 30 mg/day, it started to feel like a neuroleptic, and wiped me out.

I consider it a poor antianxiety med, but decent AD. I would rather try gepirone ER,though.

In addition to D-2 antagonism, BuSpar's metabolite (1-PP) acts as an alpha-2 antagonist. Both could lead to unease. The D-2 antagonism would be like the traditional neuroleptic akathisia, while the alpha-2 antagonism could increase anxiety.

I was always told buspar would not work if you had taken a benzo. It did nothing at all for me. And also I was told that buspar needs to be given in higher doses than the recommended ones. Fondly, Phillipa

BuSpar after a benzo

hey phillipa! OK, so some shrinks are pretty gung-ho about this "no benzos" thing. I tried buspar post-benzo and it was OK for a while, but still pretty much not so good. When I tried benzos+buspar that was pretty good though, except for the buspar akathisia-like problem.

Med, akathesia? With buspar? I thought this was benign med. And when are you going to answer my E-mail? Fonly, Phillipa

Yeah, cache-monkey got it exactly right. The D2 antagonism is a factor. The increase of norepinephrine release from buspar's metabolite is a factor. And for some people, just the serotonin agonism all by itself creates an akathisia type syndrome. Buspar is a weird med. I don't think it is nearly as benign as doctors say it is. I've seen cases of it inducing parkinsonism. And when it does work for someone, it only seems to work for a few months.

Yup....

BuSpar only helped me for a little while. Docs seem to think that anything that isn't a benzo is good, while benzos are bad. Meanwhile, more and more kids (and adults) are being put on RX speed for "adhd". Thats nice and all, but if you're giving kids amphetamines b/c they can't pay attention, could I please have a benzo so I can leave my house? Only seems fair.
