Ambien or Xanax?

Posted by Panshair on November 2, 2005, at 9:33:48

I've been on 5-10mgs of Ambien for a month. Two more months left in scrip. It works, but I was happier taking Xanax. With the latter, I didn't take it every night. I haven't been able to fall asleep initially without popping an Ambien. I also felt the Xanax worked on the tension better.

Is Ambien "safer" than Xanax? I know Xanax is a benzo (right?).

Ambien is less addicting in the sense of Xanax since alprazolam brings relief, antianxiety effect.

Ambien has a effect only on mostly sleep. Tolerance can be a concern, but compared to Xanax, it can be better.

I've heard cases where people wake up on Xanax after it wears off. Not so much with ambien. My pdoc told me that and didnt want to go that way.

Ambien is not the best for relieving anxiety, but is better maybe in the long term. Xanax is better for anxiety, but some people take it just to feel sedated.

Xanax helped me sleep b/c it relaxed whatever anxiety was keeping me from falling asleep. It's definitely short acting, which I didn't mind. I don't care about waking up. I can always get back to sleep. It's that first-going-to-bed thing. For weeks now, I simply cannot fall asleep initially, no matter how tired I am. Doesn't matter if I go to bed hungry, full, calm, without aches and pains, etc.

Overall, Ambien works better. I have yet to take like 20 min. before going to sleep. I always toss and turn for a while, then take it. It's silly, but I'm an optimist. Tonite, tho, I'll pop it before I hit the sheets.

So, it's less addicting than Xanax. But....can I take it over the long term? I don't see my initial insomnia going away anytime soon.
