Just Switched from Zoloft to Lexapro

Posted by vslyke on November 1, 2005, at 19:20:30

Looking for feedback from anyone who has switched from Zoloft to Lexapro. Have taken Zoloft for over 4 years for panic/anxiety. Got tired of the weight gain, tried to wean off on my own, had a bad experience and went a psychiatrist for some medication management. Was put on topamax for the appetite suppressant side effect (currentl 75 mgs) and was just last week switched to Lexapro. Started with five days of 50 mgs of zoloft 5 mgs of lexapro. Now taking 10 mgs of lexapro only It has only been a few days. Just feeling a little tired. I was wondering if anyone lost the weight gain side effect after switching.

I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Hi there,

I have been taking 10 mg Lexapro for about 3 1/2
months and gained a whopping 12 pounds! Yikes!!! I was really scared to take anti-depressants, becuz I have heard so many horror stories about huge weight gains from them. Doctor told me that most people DON'T gain weight from Lexapro, but I guess I'm one of the 1% or soemthing. I have felt great on Lexapro, but am very upset about packing on the extra pounds!!! Yesterday the doctor switched me to 75 mg. Effexor. Have you ever tried that one?

Well, good luck with the Lexapro....everyone is different, so it may not make you gain any weight! It did make me feel great though. I was a little tired at first, but then I started taking it at bedtime, and that worked great for me. No problems sleeping or anything.

GOOD LUCK

What was the appetite suppressant you take? Di doctor prescribe it???

I am taking 75mgs of Topamax which I believe is a low dose. She gave it to me for two reasons. One, because of the appetite suppressant side effect and two, because she was concerned with my nightly 2-3 glasses of wine drinking. (I have a family history of alcoholism.) Topomax also seems to have a side effect that causes one to lose their craving for alcohol. I have noticed that it seems to help a little for both.

I am hoping that Lexapro doesn't have the weight gain side effect for me since that was my reason for trying to go off anti-depressants in the first place. Too soon to tell since it has only been a couple of weeks. Right now I am having some nausea side effects. Did you have a problem with that? and, if so, did it go away?

I have never taken Effexor, so I can't give you feedback on that one. Is it suppose to counter the weight gain?

Thanks for the feedback and Good luck. I know how hard it is to deal with the weight gain while trying to feel good at the same time. Its very frustrating.
