Was Xanax at one time widely prescribed?

Posted by rjlockhart98 on October 11, 2005, at 21:01:07

I heard in the early 1990's, i have watched court TV with cases with people taking Xanax envolved with a situation around 1992.

I go to there web site and they say its "the most widely prescribed medication for panic disorder" , excuse me i dont think so. Klonopin in the US is 1st line. I take 6mg of Klonopin (Clonazepam) daily for severe anxiety.

Xanax i think is more prescribed to women. NOT to be discriminating, but at other sites such Remedyfind.com more women post about Xanax than men, and talk about how relieving it is.

This is like Miltown back in 1950's, always have your miltown.

Anyways, i just thought i would put my thought.

Matt

Matt my mother took miltown. And when I first had a panic attack meprobamate, miltown and valium were what worked for me. Xanax worked fine for many years. It stopped a panic attack just like that. And it's supposed to have some antideression characteristics too. It's short half-life make it hard to come off of though.Fondly, Phillipa

dont know - my pdoc had no prob giving me klonopin AND xan today. (for massive anxiety as well)

generally speaking - i KNOW general care practioners and OBs, etc...do not like RXing xan b/c of lack of understanding the drug as well as its addictive properties. but then again - dont know any general pracs who are into klonopin either. think a pdoc would prob do both w.out pause if the anxiety symptoms were on target...it's not about stoppiong an addiciton from occuring - its abt stopping agoraphobia....a general prac would never understnad that.

My pdoc slowly leveled me up to 6mg of Klonopin daily. But no Xanax. I kinda understand his viewpoint, he's old, he's seen hundrends of drug side effects, all the way back to barbiturates. My doc is in his 70's.

I think its how you come accross. I come across slow, thinking im insane, then i switch and go manic and urging that i am crazy.

I do take Restoril (temazepam) 30mg at night he had no problem with doing that, when i EXPLODED at my mom in the session, saying that he needs to listen and do what she says. I thought i was going to go on Seroquel (antipsychotic).

Well anyways i just took Restoril so im getting a little more sleepy.

But thanks for you input.

Matt

maddy4,

Are you taking both at the same time?. Doses?. I thought one should not mix them.

Matt do you think xanax caused you that?.

Klonopin is more of a mood stabilizer, maybe he switched you for this reason.

I have a script for both Xanax and Clonopin. I use them for different reasons. If I am in a state of continual anxiety, I use the Clonopin on a daily basis. If I am in a period of less severe anxiety, I use the Xanax. The short half-life allows me to "spot-treat" the anxiety. I use it only when I need it. It acts quickly and goes throught the body in a relatively short period of time. I can use less medication this way and still control the anxiety.

I think that's a common plan used in anxiety treatment and it works well. It's akin to using a long action med and a short action med in tandum to treat any number of other diseases - insulin use and controlling diabetes comes to mind as an example.

I wish we had more gender specific meds. I also think womem may speak more openly about their use of meds than men. I think benzo's in general have a high stigmatizing quality - a fact I really dislike. There are inapproiate users and inpapproiate prescribers, but the meds themselves are not "bad" and can make a huge impact on anxiety treatment.
