My experience with Nardil

Posted by denise1966 on September 11, 2005, at 8:00:48

For the first week of taking Nardil I felt really awful on it, totally spaced out and zombie like, I found it hard to register anything on it.

I took a zyprexa after 7 days of hell and felt better, then I dropped the Nardil to 60mg and felt ok, then somewhere along the line I upped it to 105 and felt really motivated on it but sort of cold to people, like I didn't really want to go out and talk much on it just wanted to keep really busy.

Then I dropped the dose back down to 60mg and felt awful again. I know your not supposed to mess around with doses but I only intended staying on NArdil anyway for 3 weeks to 4 weeks.

I know I could probably stayed on 105mg but it was a bit scarey how just lowering the dose to 90mg could make me feel so bad and out of it. I also remember feeling really really tired on 105mg which I quite liked.

Anyway, I'm finished with Nardil now just wanted to write down my experiences.

Why do people always seem to worry and complain about physical side affects, like diarreah, putting weight etc, I'd happily put up with all of that if I felt better mentally. Infact for some reason diarreah is always a good sign with me, I find if I get that then I feel better mentally which is strange.

There was a time when I could take anything and feel better really quickly, oh how I yearn for those days.

If its any comfort to you i also failed a nardil trial.

With all the hyper and so many doing well on it i so wanted it to work, but it just wasnt.

I will say it ceased anxiety big time, but there was absolutly no mood elevation at all,in fact i felt mono tone, very flat and quiet.

Im sure its possable a longer run, a higher dose might have made a diffence, but like you i couldent take it.

Did the ssri thing, cant tolerate it.Did the tca thing, nada, now im trying to get oranges from a lemon with parnate, and its rough, but with both nardil and parnate done where do i go from here?

Its pretty scary, ill have to keep working with parnate and the combo i have until that patch ever comes out,if it even is still comming out.Good luck

Hi Willyee,

Yes, I actually quite liked Nardil on 105, I actually got quite motivated on 105 but found myself waking up at all hours throughout the night like I needed no sleep at all.

But if I went back down to 90, although I had a bit of mood elevation in a couldn't care less kind of way, things looked a bit brighter but then my mood kept changing from suicidal to ok and back again. On the whole I didn't like this drug at all, felt too uncaring and detached on it at 90mg

When I first took it I just lay on my bed for hours thinking how nice it would have been to just die like that.

Anyway, I'm going back on Seroxat as soon as the washout period has finished, I hope it at least helps with the anxiety and negative thoughts then I can start thinking about trying something else.

How is the Parnate working for you? Have you ever tried Zyprexa, just 10mg every now and again. Zyprexa has always been a Godsend for me and I admire you so much for managing to get through with the Nardil and the Nardil washout period without taking anything for it. I couldn't have survived the whole Nardil experience or this whole not taking anything experience without Zyprexa.

Did you try high dose SSRI with klonopin or something thrown in at the beginning just to get you through the initial anxiety start up affects?

or high dose anything else?

try buprenorphine » denise1966

MAOI + buprenorphine is the most robust antidepressant combination I have ever taken. I have recently discontinued the buprenorphine because I believe it was worsening the sexual side effects from Nardil. I hope this isn't a transient thing, but as of now I only have a slightly delayed orgasm @ 90mg/day; no impotence, no anorgasmia. I will be quite frustrated if this is only due to withdrawal from the bupe and doesn't last.

If MAOIs failed you outright, buprenorphine is one of the next logical options. If you can fudge or have a substance abuse problem, you can get Suboxone (buprenorphine/noloxone sublingual tabs). If not, a "cavalier" doctor can prescribe bupe amps to be taken subligually four times per day.

Babblemail me if you need literature to show your doctor on the use of buprenorphine for treatment-resistant depression. Unlike typical opioids, you cannot overdose on it (except via injection along with benzodiazepines), and there is a "ceiling" concentration (mu partial agonist effect) past which it will not stimulate the receptors more. Moreover, I have had minimal-to-no withdrawal reactions upon discontinuing it. I keep it around in case I ever feel really horrible, because it works for "breakthrough depression" and anxiety if taken as-needed.
