effexor xr and fatigue/weight gain

Posted by ashton boyt on September 10, 2005, at 22:00:12

I have been on effexor xr for approximately 21/2 years. In the last 2 years I have noticed weight gain of 10-15 pounds (every six months I'm up another 5 pounds). The thing I am most concerned about is the fatigue. I have always loved sleep and appreciate a good ten hour night, but this is getting ridiculous. I will take two 1-3 hour naps during the day, and wake up even more tired then when I fell asleep. I can be watching t.v. and the next thing I know the movies over and it's time to pick the kids up from school. All I want to do is sleep or lay around all day long. My dosage was uped to 150 mg. a day, and I am wondering if it should be lowered. No doubt this drug has done wonders for me, I am not as moody, my anxiety level is almost nil, and the depression has greatly subsided. I DON'T want to go back to the angry person I was before, but I also don't want my kids to grow up with only memories of me laying around all day long. Are there any other meds that could take care of this, or can you be weaned off of effexor and return to normalcy?

Hey and welcome! i too was at 150mg of effexor xr and felt the fatigue u descibe. i eat extremely healthy, take vitamins and found no relief until i took 225 mg a day. now i have much less fatigue but ive only been at 225 for 4-5 days so i hope it lasts. if not, i have heard of people asking their docs to add other meds (ex:wellbutrin) for energy. there is a lot more info on effexor above and u can enter it into the google bar at the bottom of the page also. hope this helps.
