Effexor Weight Gain????

Posted by Jellibabe on August 15, 2005, at 2:56:15

I would like to know if anyone else has suffered weight gain on Effexor. My current dose is 450 mg p/day.
I am also on Risperdal 1 mg.
I've tried going the Topamax route to loose some weight, but it made no difference to me.
Please could someone let me know. Many thanks.

I can only tell you that, on a combination of 225mg Effexor XR and 10mg Prozac, I gained a great deal of weight. Since I stopped stepping on the scale after gaining 40 pounds, I can only estimate that I gained about 50 to 55 pounds on it, over the course of about two and a half years.

The good news is that, when I went off the drugs, much of the weight started coming off, with no changes to diet or exercise patterns. (And I was underweight to start with, so I didn't need it all to come off.)

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that was my experience.

One thing to note, by the way, is that it seemed to affect my blood sugar -- you might talk to your doctor about trying Glucophage for weight control. It's worth discussing, at any rate.

Hello!

I'm also sorry to say that I also put on weight with effexor 75mg. I just got really bad carb cravings. Celexa/cipramil also has made me gain weight - about 10kgs at my largest (thats about 22lbs). Thankfully Iäm begining to lose it....Iäm only 7kg off my pre-cipramil weight!
Kind regards
Meri-Tuuli
PS I suppose to avoid the weight gain you could strictly count calories? Its a hassle I know.

I have read all these posts about people gaining weight on Effexor, and I guess I believe it, cause you never know what is going to happen with some of these meds--it seems that it's different for everyone. I know that for me, I have lost weight and I have trouble keeping it on, even after a year and a half on 150mg/d Effexor. Since I was being treated for an eating disorder (but I currently don't have a problem with it) no one believes that this underweight problem could possibly be related to the meds, but I feel in my heart of hearts that it is.
