Alright, so I have taken a good look at myself at this point in time and realized, actually that I've gained a lot of weight. In the past I've known how to keep it off-not too complicated, but I have questions now:
I'm new to seroquel and concerned about how it may or may not hamper my efforts to lose weight.
Anyone know the 'Why?' of Seroquel weight gain, is it a food craving thing I might resist or is it a basic metabolism thing that isn't really affected by food/exercise?
What do you think?

I take Seroquel, too. If I take a high dose, it will make me very sleepy. I imagine that you don't burn as much calories when you are sleeping or rest as when you are active. I love Seroquel.

hey! Like the other poster said, you probably have reduced activity levels. However, both zyprexa and seroquel can cause a good bit of weight gain and can also cause metabolic weirdness that sometimes leads to type II diabetes. If you're having a problem with weight already (whether you already have a weight problem and seroquel is keeping you from losing it OR if the seroquel seems to be causing weight gain), you may want to consider a switch. Geodon is taken 2X daily, like seroquel, but doesn't cause as many weight problems. Abilify is the other option...its non-drowsy, sometimes somewhat stimulating, for many people and seems to be "weight-neutral". Since its non-drowsy, its easier to exercise and what not while on Abilify.

My doctor is offering up Topomax for help with losing the medication induced weight. Another option I've read about in studies is glucophage. Side effects on both -- my pdoc does say that bicarb helps the sluggish thinking on Topomax, by the way -- but they're both supposed to be pretty helpful.
Topomax is also used sometimes in treating bulimia, for whatever that's worth.

Adding meds to some drugs to prevent weight gain/cause weight loss seems to be getting kinda popular. For a while, Meridia was kind of popular...unfortunately, it really doesn't seem to have any real advantage over the old school diet pills (weaker ones like phentermine, phendimetrazine), so that kinda sucks. The topomax idea is cool, except I'd worry about being drugged into oblivion...topomax has a "rep" for making people dumb (hence the nickname, "dopo-max"). A friend of mine took phentermine before, during, and after taking low-dose Zyprexa with an SSRI (this was pre-symbyax). She actually managed to *lose* weight and keep it off, and she wasn't as sluggish as people usually get on Zyprexa.

I have gained 60-pounds in 11-months since I started taking Seriquel as a substitute for 8-years of 7 mgs a day of Klonopin for my severe anxiety disorder. I also take Prozac and Buspirne.
I feel the best I have in 15-years although if I have to be a heavy person for the rest of my life I may quit Seriquel no matter how better I feel. I was a size 30-waist last September. I am now a 42-waist and mortified!
Any advice. I have tried all the normal weight loss techniques! :o(

Welcome! And sorry, but I'm afraid people might be confused by that name, so I think I need to ask you to re-register ("for the first time") under a different one:
