Klonopin and grogginess

Posted by KaraS on July 27, 2005, at 14:18:11

I was told to expect grogginess from this medication and that it would go away within a few days to a couple of weeks.

A day and a half ago I took 1/4 of a .5 mg. pill. That's all I've taken and I'm still really groggy. I can't believe it. I dread taking it again. Did anyone have grogginess this bad from it? Did it really go away within a short time?

Thanks,
K

I've never taken it Kara, but I would be suspicious of the idea that the grogginess will go away, not because it won't but because it will. In other words you develop tolerance. And you don't want any more tolerance to it than you have to have. So if you need Klonopin I would take the minimum effective dose, which would mean you'd have to use a pill grinder, or cut it into eighths or something.

Don't worry. I'll definitely take the least amount possible.

All I know is that I gave my husband .5 to sleep. Figured that since 3mg didn't touch me it would just relax him. It took him over 24 hours to wake up. But i don't know if it was the klonopin because I flushed it all away. Now he's either up afte 2-3 hours fully awake. Or can't stay awake. Wonder if he's rapid cycling? Fondly, Phillipa

I take 1 mg in the AM, and 1mg in the afternoon and I dont experiance grogginess. It took a about a month or so before the depression/grogginess went away, but now its great for anxiety for me!!

Even the depression went away? That's good to know. Was the grogginess as intense as what I've been describing? Did you have to build up VERY SLOWLY just to get to the 1 mg. twice a day stage?

Hi Kara, I didnt really go up slowly because i was taking 3mg of xanax everyday prior to that, so i had a tolerance build up already. But, yeah, I took it for a few wks and felt bad, tired, depressed, etc. I actually asked my pdoc to switch me to something else, but my husband encouraged me to give klonopin a chance. And after about 6 wks, it worked great. Ive been on it ever since....

Hi K,

>What about the blood pressure issue?

I expect you'd be ok :-) Start very low and go slow with the Dexedrine dose. Monitor BP and pulse regularly.

PS. A retrospective review of 142 children taking desipramine alone or desipramine + methylphenidate or dextroamphetamine indicated the absense of a clinically significant interaction between desipramine and either stimulant.

Good to know! Of course I'm a lot older and more prone to blood pressure problems but we'll see what happens.

Wow, 6 weeks to get the grogginess under control. That's amazing. It could be longer for me as I need to build up a bit. I don't know how I'd survive for 6+ weeks as I have to do all of my own shopping and errands.

Thanks for your response.

K
