my 11 year old son is being prescribed despakote but he has not been diagnosed as bi polar are there any side effects that i should be aware of ?

I took 1000mg depakote for 9 months. Main side effects for me were weight gain and lethargy. I would also get very dizzy after standing from a bending over position.

Why is depakote being prescribed if your son isn't bipolar? It's an anticonvulsant also used as a mood stabilizer.
