Social Phobia: Deprenyl - only sex benefit??

Posted by johnb11 on July 23, 2005, at 14:16:21

Hi. Does anyone have any experience with either low or high dose deprenyl? Anyone achieving any benefit other than mental clarity and positive sexual impact.

I took deprenyl 60 mg/day for 2 weeks, hoping that the high doseage, where deprenyl loses its MAO-B selectivity and also inhibits MAO-A, would have an effect on Social Phobia similar to that of Nardil, but without the negative side effects.

After only 2 weeks, my major benefits were increased mental clarity and enhanced sex. The benefits as far as sex were increased desire, enhanced pleasure, increased stimulation, and significantly enhanced orgasm.

If 60 mg/day of deprenyl works for Social Phobia, that would truly be heaven on earth.
If not, I will continue to work on the various tradeoffs of traditional SP meds - diminished sex versus efficacy, weight gain vs efficacy, agitation vs. efficacy, short-term memory impairment (Klonopin), etc.

Thanks, again.

John

Your experience and mine just goes to show how we all respond so differently.

Years ago I tried deprenyl in a range of 1mg to 10mg for about a month, mostly at the lower doses though. I was also taking prozac and remeron. I wanted sexual benefits and to augment antidepressants.

Even tiny doses of deprenyl completely wiped out my sex life in every way possible, beginning about day 3. In an accumulated kind of way, anxiety and something close to psychosis slowly entered the picture. Deprenyl was not good for me in any way at any dose. The only good thing I felt from it was during day 1 and 2 when the amphetamine metabolite was working, before tolerance set in.

Deprenyl 60 mg Questions

Hey John

OK, increased mental clarity and better sex, I guess you'd expect that. But I want to know more. 60mg/d is quite a bit.

How did you sleep?
How did you feel?
Why did you stop?
Did you notice the more typical mood brightening effects of MAOIs, as opposed to stimulation?

I've taken around 10mg deprenyl/week for 10 years or so, and think it's great, but above a couple of mgs/d can't sleep well. But I'm 52 and sleep's a problem anyway.

O yeah, I don't think deprenyl's really prosocial, but it has always made me feel a bit better, and that's been welcome.

Regarding the 60 mg/day of deprenyl, I was too impatient for the anti-anxiety aspect to kick in. Other than that, just felt like I had more energy and sex was simply fantastic. Probably should have given it a full 6 weeks or so. I think I'll try it again, and just augment with Klonopin until some anti-anxiety component kicks in. Another alternative is to order Moclobemide from Canada and combine with deprenyl. It just gets a little expensive when you're paying without your insurance taking care of it.

I'm astonished. Just more sex, energy and expense?? I would have expected 12 times 5, I guess. And you slept and everything? You used liquid deprenyl or selegeline? I dunno if it makes a difference, some say it does.
I didn't like moclobemide nearly as much as Parnate. But I was taking it with SAMe 400mg/d which certainly made a difference (adverse) to 10mg/d Parnate. Maybe I shall try moclobemide without SAMe.
