Why do people propose that 5-htp replaces SSRI's

Posted by linkadge on July 10, 2005, at 21:20:49

I keep reading everwhere people saying that 5-htp does everything that an SSRI does. I have not found this to be true.

Why do people say this, and why do their effects differ so much in certain persons. Ie I've never heard of 5-htp inducing mania.

Hi Link,

I used to use 5 HTP, and although it worked well for me for mild depression, I never knew whether or not it worked as well as the SSRIs. I found that it helped with mild anxiety and depression, and was happy to have something that didn't require and Rx. I did find that at higher doses, over a period of time, it made me more depressed than normal.

It's not much good for depression IMO, but it smooths you out a bit. SAMe at least has a bit of a lift in it.

I guess that's what makes all of this so difficult and individual. SAMe didn't do anything for me, but 5 HTP eased my anxiety and lifted mild depression a bit. Weird.

I have noticed that 5-htp does something, but I just don't agree with the notion that 5-htp replaces SSRI's.

5-htp is to SSRI's what choline is to Aricept.
