Need Someone's help or input on this Question?

Posted by BRC on July 7, 2005, at 22:05:02

O.K. here is the deal. I take Lexapro, Klonopin, Trileptal, and Remeron. I have been taking some of them for over five years.

This is my question. Is it safe to be on these meds for that long. When I mean safe. Are these meds damaging to the liver, kidneys, etc. I know that the liver carries a heavy load processing these or any meds on a daily basis.

I have had my liver enzymes checked periodically and so far everything has been o.k. But the last 3-4 times I have had my blood work done they have had to make me come back b/c the tests test results concerned them. But when I would go back and re-test they said that everything looked o.k.

Now my Family doc. has added Lipitor to the mix for elevated cholesterol and I have been on it for almost a year.

My meds work well for me. But I do not want to risk the possibilty of future health risks down the road ( I am relatively young). So, if the meds are safe for the body then I will take them for the rest of my life. But if there is a chance they cause damage to the body then then risks outweigh the benefits.

So, I would appreciate it if anyone knew if the above mentioned meds (except the Lipitor--I know what it does) are potentially damaging to the liver or kidneys. By the way I do not drink or have liver disease.

Sorry for the long post I am just getting concerned at this point.

Thanks and God Bless,

BRC

I can't answer in the long term, but Lexapro and Klonopin are eliminated primarily through liver pathways from what I can gather, Trileptal seems to be mostly through the kidneys, and Remeron a mixture of both, but I could be corrected. Rxlist notes these things in the "clinical pharmacology" if you study glucouronidation (kidney) versus hepatic (liver) "elimination".

Tests aren't always reliable day to day, if they've retested and the enzyme levels are ok, that sounds like a good result.

Its allright to be concerned... a number of people on here are probably actively engaged in polypharmacy (multiple medication combinations), myself included. Feel free to grill your doctor(s) on these concerns, I think they're perfectly valid. But liver enzyme tests are fairly routine and standard, so if they're going well, as noted before, its probably a sign that things aren't being overtaxed.

Good health
cheers
