(I'm in Canada, so some of the pharms might have different names.
I've been depressed since I was about 8. I didn't try anti-depressants until two
years ago, but I wish I hadn't. First I was on Wellbutrin, which made me psychotic
(and I had never had any symptoms of it before), then on Prozac for about a year,
which also made me psychotic. I drank a bottle of wine and took the rest of a bottle
of Prozac, and I was hospitalized. They added the anti-psychotic Risperdal, which
made me lactate (ARGH!!!) and was therefore eventually changed to Seroquel, as well
as the mood stabilizer Lamotrigine.
I was okay for a while, then I started to get seriously depressed again, became
suicidal and was hospitalized again. Without asking me or informing me of its side-
effects and agonizing withdrawal, they put me on Effexor. Now I am sick of
psychiatric sugar pills and damn patent medicines. We are being used as guinea pigs.
I am going off all the damn drugs and sticking to a medicine that has thousands of
years of use without a single recorded death. You know the one.
I am never trusting a doctor again! I have had so many bad experiences with them. I have probably been to or received treatment from 20 doctors in the past few years, and maybe one or two I respected.

I know what you feel. I have been on and off them. They make me psychotic too. I have thoughts on them that don't make any sence at all when off them.

Hi Pink I was dubious of the brain/drug theory of depression until I was prescribed a combination that worked. In my case it's 40 mg Citalopram (Celexa), 20 mg lithium (I think) and 2.5 mg Zyprexa. I've also given up drink. I'm now trying to come off Xanax after many years. So I hope you can find something that's as effective. It's so good when that inner warmth returns. I'd almost forgotten what it felt like. I think we're used as guinea pigs in the sense that although we're generically the same, individually we're different, so in a way each person carries out his or her own clinical trial (not clinical really - just a figure of speech)
Good luck
Fred
