Couldn't believe it but my pdoc said that when all of you try different combinations of meds that's how she learns about them. Said everything is trial and error. If you told her that x,y,z made you feel better she would remember it and maybe try it. That's pretty awesome. Told her what you said Scott about desipramine and nortriptaline and she nodded her head yes. Said to say on the luvox that maybe I was getting drug sensitive again. Didn't want to change my meds til she saw what happened. Fondly, Phillipa

I've encountered this too. It's troubling to see that the approach to mental health is still so primitive these days.

Its good in some ways that they're being honest, but it also scares me.
When my TV breaks down, somtimes if I kick it in the side pannel it works better (for a while). Would I trade this approach for a qualitfied and knowledgable technition who was able to open it up and replace the bad circut? No.
"Trial and error" docs are good in that you can try a whole bunch of stuff that may help, but my last trial and error doc had me on a combination of junk that was a bad trip from the get go. In other words, know your stuff if you decide to see them.

Of course she did, that is her job! I have know idea why this would surprise you. Would you think her a better doctor if she ignored her patients experience? You should be happy, you have a smart shrink!

It's better than ignoring their patients experiences and instead believing whatever they read or the sale people tell them.

better the patient than the drug rep. It is true that most doctors quit medical training after medical school. drug reps are their biggest providers of medical information, second would be patients if they don't have a know it all attitude.

I agree. My p-doc listens very closely when I report back after trying a new med, and she's sensitive to my reactions and our main goal.
I'm glad we've got a good relationship.

I hear the same from my doc, that essentially he uses what works and its all trial and error. I appreciate his honesty, but have some disdain that science hasn't moved as far forward as I wish it had. The brain is far too complex to treat it like the liver. Somewhere in all that electrochemical goo lies your individual experience and perhaps even your soul.
For the ones that care, it has to be a tough job.

I know many doctors that continue to prescribe by the book despite their patients reports.
