will I have to be on meds the rest of my life?

Posted by MichaelJr on June 24, 2005, at 4:41:48

I have been on various anti depressants and they never worked. I finally got some testing done and they diagnosed me with severe depression and schizoaffetive disorder I think. the negative effects of schizophrenia really described how I was feeling. my type of depression was of the variety that I felt like I was in a deep pit or some kind of black hole. talking to people was not pleasurable for me, I could never make a connection with people. very serious and an awful way to live.

so I tried anti psychotics. I am on geodon now, and it really helps me. my mood has improvved, I have more to say, and am able to connect with people much better.

I really hate being on it though. I feel kind of drugged and it often makes me tired. it takes me a long time to wake up in the morning too.

for someone with my history and diagnosis, can I expect to be on meds for the rest of my life?

Probably. That's the bad news.

I guess it depends on the accuracy of your diagnosis and your history of pathology. If you are truly schizoid or bipolar, the answer is most likely yes. However, you do not have to be on Geodon for the rest of your life. You can try other antipsychotics with more favorable side effects. New drugs are coming. Who knows what will come in your lifetime.

Think positive. You are extremely fortunate that your illness responds well to a drug that currently exists. That's the good news. There are plenty of people who are refractory to treatment. You will eventually accept your illness and the idea that it must be treated long term.

It is really hard to predict these things. Here's a hopeful story though. I had a friend with a very similar story to yours. After a little while on an AP, she got much better. Her doc actually said that she probably didn't have schiz symptoms, just regular depression that looked really bad.

She also was in therapy and that seemed to help her too.

Best,
EE
