cymbalta and sex

Posted by zana on June 21, 2005, at 22:56:23

Have been on 60mgs of Cymbalta for several months. Works great as an antidepressant except for one thing - it makes me totally numb sexually as in no sensation at all. Much, much worse than 40mgs of Prozac.
Anybody have any experience with this?
Am getting totally depressed about it.

Have you tried splitting the dose?
Try to keep the time you take it as far away from sexual activity as possible.

Maybe you could add in a bit of Wellbutrin (the SR NOT XL)

Good Luck!

I was going to suggest the same 2 things as KayeBaby. First try taking it as many hours as possible prior to anticipated sex. Or, Wellbutrin can help.

There's a drug called cyproheptidine that can help, too, if your problem is anorgasmia. It blocks the effects of the Cymbalta on the serotonin receptors responsible for the sexual difficulties. If your problem is lack of libido, though, it won't help with that.

Cyproheptidine is an old antihistimine, and is used for a bunch of things totally unrelated to allergies. It's used as an appetite stimulant, for sexual side effects, for a number of rather arcane veterinary conditions (my cat takes most of my prescription, actually), etc.

Hope that helps a bit.

Hi Zana,

Yes, I noticed that Cymbalta had a signicant effect on sexual motivation, both libido and orgasm. I have weaned down until I'm almost off of Cymbalta (I thought that it exacerbated by mygraine headaches), and I notice that libido and orgasmic responses are much improved.

I'm a weird Cymbalta case since I'm doing very well on only 8mg. That's probably not enough for significant sexual dysfunction but I have noticed libido is down, although response is fine if not better. In other words, I'm not going out of my way to seduce, but once I'm into it, no problemo.
