Lexapro, Effexor or nothing

Posted by NESuccess on June 15, 2005, at 9:18:03

I'm 30 years old and have recently just had a hard time with some common problems (job, stress, etc.)

My doctor was quick to prescribe Lexapro and therapy. But after going to therapy and the doctor in that office they told me to take Effexor instead.

I've taken neither and was getting better just taking Lorazapam to help me sleep, but I don't want to get hooked on that either.

PLEASE HELP!

I take Lexapro and it's been a good med for me. Prior to that I used Klonopin routinely and that was a good med also and continues to be. I knew for the past, I was unable to tolerate anything that worked on norepi due to already having an anxiety issue. So, I nixed Effexor as a choice.

In terms of med dependence, I made peace with that a long time ago. I had someone explain it very well to me. I have a finite number of days on this earth. I can struggle each and every day or I can use something that helps improve the quality of my life and hopefully, live with more contentment and better functioning. Either way, those days are going to go by.

I also realize the difference between medical dependence and addiction. There is a big difference. If I'm dependent on a med and I'm doing well, I'm okay with that -- some are not, but I am.

Good Luck,
Glydin

I agree. And if the lorazepam is helping the anxiety alone why add something with the potential of side effects and withdrawal symptoms. Benzos aren't that hard to come off of if you ever want to. Fondly, Phillipa

lorazepam was the first thing i did. i just took that. i just didn't want to take anything. and it was just fine for quite some time. eventually i tried the SSRI route, which was the right thing to do. but all that is to say, i came off the lorazepam without much difficulty. it was a little difficult for a couple days i can recall, but it wasn't hair raising impossible. so do what you think is best for you right now.

You sound like you're handling it just fine. I wouldn't take the Effexor or the Lexapro simply because they had been Rxd for me. That said I've never taken either......but you are not silly to be cautious.
