pregnancy and medication?

What happens if you get pregnant while on medication? would that result in a baby having problems or can you go off the medication as soon as you know for sure and the baby still be fine?

Thanks!

Anyone know? I am just wondering if a person gets pregnant while on meds what then? Or do people who take meds have to really plan.

Hi Rainbow.

I'm sorry you feel neglected. Yes, it is a common problem. Perhaps the weight of the consequences should someone suggest to you something deleterious to you or the baby dissuades people from making recommendations. Larry Hoover submitted a treatise on this issue perhaps a year a go. It was excellent.

You will find some conflicting opinions out there. Some say it is recommended that you abstain from medication during the first trimester to avoid birth defects. Others advocate tapering medication prepuerally so that the baby doesn't have to experience a withdrawal syndrome that can be quite serious.

If it were me, I think I would opt in the direction of continuing medication if you feel there is a high risk of relapse. During the last trimester, you might want to begin tapering medication in such a way as to prevent a withdrawal syndome appearing. You can take a look at the "Withdrawal" board for ways to go about this with minimal discomfort. Whatever you experience, the child also experiences in one way or another. I believe one can discontinue a medication within a month if they taper it the right way.

Congratulations!

Thanks so much!

oops Im not pregnent I had just had a talk about it with a friend about what I would do, becasue in the event that I did get pregnant I would keep it. I had a scare once and I was on topamax at the time. Not a good one for babies.

I worry about being on meds to begin with so I wasnt sure how that would work. She thought it was fine to take them until you actually are pregnant but that worries me, I thought you would have to be off for a time before even concieving to be perfectly safe?

Thanks again for the info!

and Thanks to Larry!!! (nm)

Boy how times have changed. When i was pregnant with my third child many moons ago, I was on valium, placidyl, and a lot of alchohol. As a matter of fact the pdoc prescribed the kind of wine I should drink nightly. My OBGYN knew about it all and didn't object. Then when I went into false labor the OBGYN gave me two seconals! I didn't even sleep. In the morning I was sent home. But when she was born she cried 24hours a day and projectile vomited every feeding for over a year. I had to refeed her each time. I think she was withdrawing from meds. I'm dead serious she really did cry all day and night. After about two weeks we would take her back to the hospital. Go home, sleep, and when we returned she was sleeping also. I thought I had been a bad mother. What I didn't know was that they were drugging her too! Thankfully she's okay today with no real problems. Just a lot of energy. Fondly, Phillipa
