Hiya
Sorry I've been away from the board for a while but haven't been good.
Hope everyone else is doing ok.
Does anyone know anything about an EEG? What is it for? Why do they use it? Is it to rule things out or to diagnose?
I have no clue.
I've tried looking on the net but it all looks a bit bllah to me.
Thanks for any info xxxxxxxxxxx

Hi Pretty!
I hope you got my mail! Love the pics :-)
An EEG measures the electrical activity in different parts of your brain. They stick lots of little things on your head. Here is a picture of someone having an EEG.........

An EEG *can't* diagnose a psych disorder such as schizophrenia or depression. EEGs are used to detect various 'medical' conditions which might mimic a psych disorder. An EEG is particularly important to diagnose epilepsy.

Ah Ed!!! That pic is scary!! The person looks terrified!! ha ha
Anyway thanks, yes I'm sure it will be fine. Will it be able to detect brain tumors? Do they ask you questions during it?
I am so booored today (oh what a surprise). I'm waiting for my nan to come pick me up. We're going to see a variety show tonight that her friends from the church are performing in.
COME ON!
I know how to have a good time time hey.

Hi Pretty!

It sometimes can do. Have you ever had an MRI scan?

pretty_paints-
Do you need to have an EEG?
Its not scary. I had one last year. I have Tourettes, which is a neurological disorder, so I had an EEG to rule out any other problems and make sure it really was Tourettes. They will glue a bunch of little electrode things to your head. This is mostly humiliating, not at all painful (the glue comes right off later). The wires are attached to a computer (or something).
The whole process is pretty long, which is annoying. I think they asked me to do some things, like move my arms or legs and stuff so they could make sure the computer was reading all of the parts of the brain that the wires are supposed to be connecting to. The only somewhat scary part was doing a "hyperventilation". I had to breath really deep and fast for a few minutes, which was wierd and I was a little afraid I might pass out, but the technician is right there with you the whole time and if you do feel sick or anything, you can just stop. Most of the time they just tell you to lay down and relax.
At the end, they peel all the electrodes off (which doesn't hurt) and you have a lot of sticky gunk in your hair, which is embarrasing if you have to go anywhere besides right home, but once you shower its all fine.
I hope that helped. You'll do fine. Good luck!

i've had a few eeg's in my lifetime. they were all to check my brainwaves for epilepsy. i had to go 24 hrs without sleeping, and come in for my appt in the morning. they hooked me up to a bunch of wires(which doesnt hurt), and did a series of diff. things like; flash a strobe light in my closed eyes, let me drift off and then wake me... all of this is to check your brainwaves....mine had spikes which means i have epilepsy. i'm not sure what else they use eeg's for, but that is my experience. don't be frightened of them...the worst part of it is trying to keep yourself up for 24 hrs. hope this has helped.
This is the end of the thread.
