I live in Costa Rica and am considering kicking my codeine habit with naltrexone. Quite a few drugs that are not available in the US are over the counter here so I was wondering if this one is or where to look for iformation on it.

Hi
How much codeine are you taking? (And for how long?) Why do you think naltrexone would help? Are you trying to normalise your opiate receptors? Or is it to ensure abstinence? You don't take any other opioids?

I have been taking around 200+ mg. twice a day orally, seperated from acetaminophine tablets. I started as an alchohlic and quit for 10 years, but took Vicodin etc. when I could off - and on for a few years. Now I live in Costa Rica and can buy Tylenol 3 over the counter soooo---- I want to quit. Have quit several times, but never stayed clean, and have been preparing to take a month off to get myself clean.kellb

So you are going thru some chemical process to seperate the opiate, or am I just confused? I take vicodin too for cronic pain, the only reason I don't abuse it is I hate to run out. God knows if codeine did anything for me and I could buy Tylenol 3 OTC I would be in the same boat as you. Whatever route you choose, naltrexone or whatever I wish you good luck in your fight.

i could be wrong, but i don't think naltrexone would be of much help to you. As an opioid antagonist it would probably just push you into withdrawal faster (& probably harder) than by going cold turkey. MAYbe it could be of some use if you just wanted to make the withdrawal duration shorter and could stick it through.
i don't know. Just my opinions.
Oh, also you should post about this question on the Withdrawal board instead. Good luck.> I live in Costa Rica and am considering kicking my codeine habit with naltrexone. Naltrexone is just supposed to help with cravings after you're off the opiate. It also discourages you from using opiates while you are taking it because even if you use, you won't get high. I took it for a while. It didn't help with cravings, it did keep me from getting high when I used opiates and it made me nauseated (but so do opiates).
Good luck. Just quit using Lortab/vicodin recreationally/abusively a couple months ago myself.
