Hi...I was on effexor for 8 months for depression. Helped great for the depresssion, but had to get off due to mania. Made me very nasty, hyper and not able to sleep. I have been off the med for 6 wks. and right away my pyschatrist wanted to put me on Risperdal for bipolar. My family dr did not agree and put me on Merinol for 2 months until the effexor gets out of my system. I do not think I am bipolar. Does effexor and effexor withdrawl cause symptoms similiar to bipolar? And are there tests to see if a person is bipolar? My pyschatrist seemed to diagnose that very hastily. Thanks for any input.

Yes, my daughter and I both took an MMPI test (560 questions, I think) to diagnose us as Bipolar II. My daughter's psychologist didn't think she was, and her psychiatrist dissagreed with him. I wanted to be sure also with his diagnosis, because he seemed to be so sure of it on the first visit. He wanted her to take the MMPI, and when it was read and printed out, it showed that she is indeed Bipolar II. The same thing was then applied to me, and I have the same diagnosis. It does run in families. I don't blame you for thinking the dianosis is hasty, because I did the same thing. You may want to ask about the test.-L

You are welcome. Some people don't put much faith on those tests, so don't worry too much about it. -L
