bipolar II tapering off valium

Posted by repop on May 18, 2005, at 10:25:45

I've used xanax for years for mostly for sleep. It seems to have lost it's effect so now I'm tapering off of it using valium. Being BP2 for me has always meant a slight depression that I can't treat because A/Ds make me hypermanic. The Valium is making me very depresssed and is not helpful for my sleep, but is getting me off the xanax, the taper takes a few months. Any suggestions for sleep and depression.
thanks

I've tried everything for sleep except lunesta. And all I get is a few hours at a time. Then I have to remedicate. Fondly, Phillipa

are you BP2 also? I think using benzos for sleep is a bad idea. with .25 xanax I was waking up every 2-3 hours and taking another. Anyway, i got hooked on them and now getting off is hellish and exacerbates BP2 aggitation and depression.
Thanks for the feed back

I don't think so, but the definition of bipolar is getting complicated. I think it's mostly anxiety and depression. I know what you mean about xanax. It only works for 3-4 hours even though I think they say it can last for up to 8. That's why I like valium better. It has a longer half-life. Although even that isn't helping now. I'm still watching the posts on lunesta. So far there seem to be good and bad. Fondly, Phillipa
