>Eskalith CR and Paxil...the lithium was added to augment the antidepressant effects of the Paxil. It's not like I did a 180 and went from being bed-ridden to Mr. Personality...the meds had a calming effect on my state of mind and allowed me to function normally in social situations. Interpersonal sensitivity was greatly reduced, and I was able to let go of things that didn't go my way.

Yeah, they do...but I've already f*cked my brains up with pharmaceuticals. It's probably a little too late to go back...I'm going on Nardil, which is probably the worst in terms of side-effects. But I don't care at this point...the Paxil pooped out on me.

Everything pooped out on me too. Now I take the valium and just try and get by. I can't socialize at all very well. Just go to the gym and carry on a casual conversation for short periods of time. When I leave my pulse is always over l00. And not from excercise, from anxiety that I internalize. Fondly, Phillipa

Hi Matt,
You being a med student, this sounds controversial, what do you medical peers think of this?
Cheers

I have life-long, treatment-resistant dysthymia (which can easily slide into double depression, especially in the winter) and moderate social phobia /w inattentive ADD, although I wonder if the inattentive ADD just really isn't some kind of reward deficiency syndrome that goes along with dysthymia.
I get 100% remission from a combination of an MAOI and buprenorphine. I was on tranylcypromine 200mg/day alone, which was working very well for the social phobia and OK for the dysthymia, but the insomnia was driving me crazy. Also, my hookup for raw tranylcypromine powder, which enabled me to take that much, raised their price such that I could no longer afford it. So, I switched to Nardil today. So far, so good. Much calmer, a little tired, definitely hungrier, but no bad S/E yet (knock on wood!)
When I added the buprenorphine, I felt like I was reborn. That dysthymic "blah, why bother" and inability to follow through on things no matter how hard I tried--even something as menial as cleaning my room--vanished almost overnight when I hit 16mg/day buprenorphine.

Hi Chairman, interesting post

is it safe to take it with a MAOI??I was on tranylcypromine 200mg/day alone, which was working very well for the social phobia and OK for the dysthymia, but the insomnia was driving me crazy. Buprenorphine is a mixed agonist/antagonist opioid drug. If you look it up on google, you can find out how it works; I've posted an account of how it works so many times here that I just can't bring my fingers to do it again. ;)
Buprenorphine combines very well with MAOIs, and without incident. The only opioids that one cannot use with MAOIs are demerol/meperidine/pethidine and its derivatives (such as tramadol). However, those are so toxic compared to other opioids I don't know why they're even prescribed. Well, I _do_ know, but the logic is twisted and perverse.
My dose of Nardil is 75mg/day, and I've been on it since May 3. I actually started at 60 at the request of my pdoc, whose supervisor (she is very young and just got her license, so she needs help using MAOIs since they don't teach anyone anything about using them in practice anymore; pathetic, huh?) felt that 75mg (the therapeutic dose is generally 1mg/kg, and I am 80kg) was too high a dose to start me on, despite taking the 120mg/day parnate beforehand. Well, after about 2 days at 60mg, I started getting brain shocks akin to SSRI withdrawal. I bumped it up to 75mg, and the day after I bumped it up, the withdrawal zaps were signficiantly attenuated. Hopefully they will go away soon. It's simply too early to say which side effects I am having from Nardil.
In terms of side effects, Parnate gave me: occasional impotence, delayed orgasm, and insomnia, sometimes severe. That's it.
Nardil seems like it increases my appetite somewhat, makes me overly tired after my morning dose, delayed orgasm. That is it so far.
Both drugs (especially with buprenorphine) are superior to any other antidepressant (and many illicit mood elevators, too) for me.
This is the end of the thread.
