Prozac jitters

Posted by kodybird on May 1, 2005, at 17:14:38

I began taking Prozac (20 mg.) a week ago. I have been on many other antidepressants but have never felt so "jittery". I feel like I have had "too much coffee". I also take Dexedrine (40 mg.) which usually gives me energy without the jittery feeling, but since starting Prozac, the Dexedrine doesn't seem to energize me like it normally does. Will this "shaky" feeling eventually stop or is Prozac just not going to work for me?

I quit after 3 days. The first day wallpapered the hall[had been planning to do it for three years], second day nervous, third day panic all day. Took 3 days of xanax to come down. Now you could only get it in 20mg caps then so maybe you could take a lower dose and work up or take it every 3rd day as it's half-life is so long. Fondly, Phillipa

Thank you for the advice. I'm going to try taking the 20mg capsule every other day. I'll give it a week. If no improvement I will have to try another med. Thanks again, this is my first time posting and I found it very helpful. What a great idea!

First of all, why are you starting with 20mg. I've been on 10mg for about 3 weeks and the jitters went away (takes about two weeks). I tried to move up to 20mg for 4 days and couldn't function.
It's not a good idea to start high on any of these meds. Your body needs time to adjust before you up the dose.

For me the jitters were horrible initially, but they did go away within a few days.
Then I became lethargic.

Prozac didn't work well for me

Curiously enoughth I never felt jittery on Effexor, even when I moved up to 225mgs.

They do make 10mg pills. You might try 10mg instead.

Fluoxetine is the most stimulating SSRI there is, so if your jitteriness does not go away in 1-2 weeks, IMO you should switch. What disorder(s) are you taking this for? SSRIs are "jacks of all trades, masters of none". If you share with the board what your situation is, I'm sure many people--including myself--could recommend alternative meds if the Prozac does not work.
