I am currently on what is now just 37.5 mg of Effexor. First time on this drug and I can't get off of it. Dizzy, sick at stomach, headache. I have been on Zoloft before and had minimal problems, if any, coming off of it. Dr. wants to switch me to Zoloft and have me try to come off of this instead since I had better luck with it. Has anyone had a similar experience?

I personally don't have a similar experience, but I have read a lot of posts of people in your situation. I think that you might be better off starting the Zoloft now (maybe a low dose), along with the Effexor. Keep taking the Zoloft as you gradually discontinue the Effexor.

I'd actually rather be on nothing as I was only on it for post partum depression. I took Zoloft after first child. This was a little more severe, so my dr prescribed effexor instead...should have just stuck to Zoloft. I am now trying 1/2 of the 37.5 a day...seems to be better than just taking a pill every 3 days...obviously not the way to wean. I'm just afraid if I swith to Zoloft, I'll get addicted to that...convince myself I need it.

I dont think there is any proof that effexor is more effective than zoloft. Infact, it might be the opposite.
Anyhow, if it is the capsules of effexor you may try opening them up and reducing this way.
Grab a good multivitamin and some fish oil for support.

Yes, I have read that for my problem, Zoloft was probably a better choice. I have started fish oil...thanks. Does not sound that I am in as bad a place as a lot of people. The highest I was ever at was 75mg. Never again. If I ever have to resort to this again, it will be Zoloft since I know from experience that I don't have the side effects. But like I said, I'd rather take nothing. Thanks.

Effexor does not come in any other form does it? Just capsules? Sure would be easier to cut a tablet in half or just decrease a liquid amount

Perhaps it does come in other forms.
When I came off effexor, I dumped the entire contents in a bowl, then removed a fixed number of pellets per day. Then I dumped the remainder in a cup, and swallowed them with a little water.

from your doctor and use it to taper both Effexor and X at the same time. This should make your discontinuation problems way less severe. Good luck!

How long do I stay on the Zoloft? I actually have a starter pack of that.

>What dosage tabs does it contain? It's been so long since I took Zoloft I can't remember the #s - 12.5 and 25? I would split the 25s in half (you can do it with a knife or get a pill splitter at Walmart.) Anyway, take the lowest dosage you can of the Zoloft until they are gone. Start them two or three days before you conpletely stop the Effexor.
Keep us posted on how it goes!

I believe zoloft starts at 50mg tabs. I'm taking it now. My pdoc always gives me samples. I cut the 50mg tabs in half. She said to go up on it but I don't think I will. Fondly, Phillipa

> ColleenThanks everyone for your input. Good news is I am on day 2 of a reduced dose of Effexor and I feel ok...Ok enough that I'm hoping I won't need Zoloft. We'll see, I'll give it a few days. My dr told me the usual every day, every other day, every 3 days etc. That is what got me into trouble. So we will see how this every day, at a reduced dose and taking that down little by little goes. I hope this works as this is what I want to do...go off of it completely. This post partum depression thing is hard!!
