Hi,
My doc was thinking that dilantin might be worth a shot. All I see are cases of ppl developing depression from dilantin.
Any ideas?
Thanks,Diane

I gave it a try years ago. It did nothing good or bad, just nothing. I can't remember where I got the idea to try it, I suspect it was from my well meaning alternative medicine crazed sister inlaw. Certain Natropaths have been touting Dilantin for years, claiming it effectively treats damn near everything. It would be nice to have a disorder that could be treated with alternative meds. But alas it looks like mines stubborn and impervious to light weight meds.
Do a google search, if you cannot find studies done in reputable journals in which Dilantin was shown to be effective in people with symptoms like yours, I would recomend looking elsewhere and try something else. Best wishes.

I have heard of it just plain making people feel weird.
It has similar pharmachological actions as say tegretol. Have you tried other anticonvulsants.

Some time ago I tried it.
And it was great! for about 5 hours, then I "crashed"
Stimulating and a good concentration enhanching effect.
The problem with me I guess are the enzyme inducing properties of dilantin. I am sure it caused a drop in blood levels of most other drugs I take.
If you try monotherapy or adjust the other drugs, its sure worth a try in my opinion. Really a strange drug....be well

yeah, linkadge, I have tried lamictal and trileptal and keppra. None have done anything. Neurontin, however, is really important for me...helpful with anxiety.
Sometimes I wish my doc would try these things out on himself before he suggests ideas that are rather "out there".

Linkadge,
Please forgive my late response. I have been moving and had no internet.
My diagnosis is the ever nebulous bipolar II. It has been a very long time since I have felt manic at all....
Lithium was a wonder drug for several months...insofar as it helpd depression. Now....not so much, but then there are also life factors to consider.
You are considedered bipolar as well, no? I remember your toying with going on lithium again....
Take care of you....I'm sorry you are having it so bad and have been down for so long..........

Hi Diane.
Perhaps Lyrica (pregabalin) will offer you the anxiolytic effect you are looking for. I wish I knew when this drug would reach the pharmacy shelves. I would like to try it myself for any antidepressant properties it might possess.

Hi Scott,
I hadn't heard of lyrica - unless it is pfizer's little "apology" for neurontin :-). My doctor mentioned something like that....
Don't let me fool you....anxiety is an issue, but depression is still one too...more like an adhedonia...it just takes so damn much to get myself to do things that I KNOW I will enjoy doing! If I were a horse I would put a carrot in front of my own nose so that I would get to the gym LOL.Oh well....thanks for the suggestion
