I'd like to hear from anyone who's had experience using Valium solely for pain/discomfort of muscle spasms or muscle tension. Was it helpful? What was your dosage? Or take as needed?
thanks for your help

CB,
Valium is rarely used for this purpose any more -- might try skelaxin or cyclobenzaprine first. Yet if you really insist on going that route the typically dosing ranges from 2mg to 10mg t.i.d. or q.i.d.

Matt

I didn't know this. When I started back on valium after many years I kept waiting for the relaxation I used to experience. Fondly, Phillipa

I recently read that sometimes when you have spasms in your throat (that lump in the throat feeling).. they sometimes prescribe Valium to relax that muscle ( I don't recall the real name of that muscle).
So I think it makes some sense that it could be used as a muscle relaxer.

I sprained my back a few months ago and my psychiatrist was kind enough to prescribe 10mg Valium for me to take at bedtime. Valium worked better than the muscle relaxants (Robaxin, Flexerill) to relieve the pain. It's a great drug, way under prescribed these days.

Really? Since I've restarted after years, I've not noticed it. As a matter of fact, I woke-up last night with my muscles in my lower legs twitching. Fondly, Phillipa

CB,
Sorry it is taking me so long to respond. I don't have time to flip through the PDR right now, but intuitively I would say that there should not be any interaction between skeletal muscle relaxants (Soma, Skelaxin, Flexeril...) and monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Check with your doc though as they both have some CNS effects...

That's what I figured, and it's good to know that at least one person had good results with Valium. This particular muscle relaxant that comes from Japan that I've tried, known as Myonal, has not helped me one bit.
Everyone, thanks for the suggestions.

Hi cubbybear,
Cyclobenzaprine is structurally related to the tricyclic antidepressants. It *may* inhibit the reuptake of serotonin- this doesn't appear to have been researched. I would be cautious about taking it with Parnate because of the theoretical possibility of inducing the serotonin syndrome.
Kind regards,
Ed.

Ed,
See... this is why whatever you are studying is the wrong direction for you. Sure, it's a long, long, long, ........ time to spend in school. Without a doubt it has to be amongst the most worthwhile - and you already have the CNS system down it would seem, why not throw in a little anatomy and physiology and some blood and call it good!
Regards =D

Oh God--well thanks much for telling me that. One can never be too careful when it comes to MAOIs.
