psychotic depression... and sinus infection?

Posted by NDS on April 14, 2005, at 3:05:47

my 16 year old son had an episode in October that was diagnosed as Pyschotic Depression. He was hospitalized, and was on Risperdal then zyprexa, then Geodon, (all in combo with Prozac) and was for the most part back to his old self by mid January and back to school. Recently, he's been having days, and brief episodes that seem to parallel what happened right before he had his major episode in October. He had a pretty bad sinus infection when he had his serious episode -- and now he has a sinus infection again, that PARALLELS his emotional and psychological symptoms. Has anyone noticed a pattern of sinus infections in relation to episodes of mental illness? It's just too coincidental.

Wow! My cousin became ill physically with a bad flu before her first manic episode, and it happened again this time (and she has had only these two episodes). I also remember that she talked of using either an inhaler or nose spray or something of that nature, so something was up with her respiratory system..
I have no explanation; but I know my cousin has now decided this is a sign that a manic episode may be coming...

I am on medication for Bipolar illness but I still cycle up and down slightly. My therapist and I have noticed that a cold or a series of sicknesses (I have three young children, so we get sick a lot during the cold months) will throw me into a downward spiral of depression. My theory is this: 1. that my very sensitive system gets run down by a cold and so it pulls the whole thing off, and/or:
2. my mood starts to get bad because I'm feeling sick and I can't get it back up again.
Good luck. I think you're on to something here. Keep a daily journal for him with a brief description of mood/sickness/anything out of the ordinary, and you will probably find some patterns that will be priceless to him as he gets older and has to learn to anticipate a mood swing. I am learning now to change my medication BEFORE a mood swing happens, once I've been sick for a while and starting to feel run down.

I've been having multiple sinus infections over the last year or that seem to tie into my depression. It could be that depression is weakening the immune system or it could be seasonal allergies flaring up that trigger the infections. Also, some ADs increase the symptoms of allergy and asthma sufferers.

very interesting.
my GP(pa) has told me that i could only use the nasal sprays (for congestion) for 3 days max cuz otherwise they would most likely induce a manic episode.

Have you ever heard of PANDAS?

"PANDAS, is an abbreviation for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections. This term is used to describe a subset of children who have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and/or tic disorders such as Tourette's Syndrome, and in whom symptoms typically worsen following strep infections such as 'Strep throat' and Scarlet Fever."

We have a tendency to ear infections, sinus infections, and strep throat in this family. In addition, I had a strange viral infection and a long bout with vertigo prior to my first episode of depression that required medical therapy. Very interestinggg... (This kind of stuff can make you crazy.)

I heard about PANDAS when I was researching my son's developmental problems. The web site is http://intramural.nimh.nih.gov/research/pdn/web.htm
