switching benzos; klonoping to xanax?

Posted by notfeelingthebest on April 11, 2005, at 2:31:11

Ive been taking klonopin for almost a year now and its the only thing that ive ever found thats ever been effective for anxiety. Problem is, ive gone from 4 to 6 and now im pretty much tolerant so...

i still get some benefits, like i dont wigg out when i meet a friend in the street. Otherwise, Im turning into a bit of a dope again.

I had a pdoc tell me that you couldnt switch benzos because they are all essentially the same thing. If you grow tolerant to one, you are tolerant to them all. But then Ive had pharmacists tell me this isnt the case.

Has anybody had any experience?

ive been using benzo's for a few years and i do find that they are cross tollerant.

howcome your switching from a longer acting benzo to a benzo, that being xanax, which has a shorter half life? Its my understanding of benzo's that the shorter the half life the harder to get off them. But maybe im wrong? So if I am please correct me. Im a bit confused, are u trying to come off them or you want a better effect? Anyway, best of luck with it and I hope it works for you. Take care :)

When i was on xanax I asked my old pdoc what would happen if xanax stopped working for me. He said I would have to switch benzos for awhile. It did stop working for me. Now I'm on low doses of valium. Fondly, Phillipa

Maybe she could switch to Xanax XR? I've never been on that but it's supposed to last much longer than regular Xanax I've read here and elsewhere.

Xanax XR works great but needs to be prescribed twice daily. My doc prescribed it every 12 hours, I took 1mg at 7:00am and 7:00pm and it worked very well without the tiredness Klonopin caused me.

If clonazepam is anything to go buy, I'm sure all the benzos work great. I was just wondering about what that other guy called "cross-tollerance." I'm tolerant to clonazepam and I think that if I wan't to switch I'll have to find a new pdoc (and we all know how fun that is).

He is certain that if you're tolerant to one, you're tolerant to them all. Yet, I keep hearing from other professionals and patients that this is not always the case; its different for each person. My doc's response is "there's loads of dubious information on the internet."

I wish Dr. Bob had some time to shed some light.

It's confusing. But if you become tolerant to one you probably won't be with another. At least that's my understanding. Fondly, Phillipa
