Depression, Hypomania, or Anxiety????

Posted by D minor on April 5, 2005, at 0:56:55

Hey guys,
I'm having major trouble concentrating. It started when, for no appearant reason, I got depressed again. However, I started Cymbalta and now my mood is good again, but I still can't concentrate. When I sit down to read in the afternoon, so many other things are going through my mind. I can't seem to sit still. I feel like running around in circles.

What's the matter with me? Is my lack of concentration due to lingering depression? Or is it hypomania setting in or just anxiety or akathisia due to the Cymbalta?

Thanks,
dm

I'm sorry I don't know the answer, but before I got really depressed I loved reading;would go thru two novels a week. I haven't been able to read since. I have a whole bookcase I haven't read. I go to Sams Club and would keep buying them but finally got smart and quit. I am sure someone here will have answers for you.

All my best; I know its discouraging.

It could be the Cymbalta. When I tried it, I got super restless and agitated. You said your mood was ok after being on it, so it might be Cymbalta-induced activation. I go through phases where I'm just "scatterbrained", not high or irritable. Projects get started and I'm driven to get a lot of stuff done, but there's no "high energy" or really impatience behind it.. like a pure ADHD thing (racing tangential thoughts w/o euphoria or hostility). There are lots of AD's that cause my thoughts to race. It could be a "hypomania" thing, or the med just triggers restlessness, or it could simply be that you have got a lot of stuff you are worrying about (a GAD thing), and can't focus.

Are you a student? If so, I would recommend that you ask your doctor about taking a stimulant such as Ritalin. Since your mood is good, do not stop taking the Cymbalta.

Hi:
>>> When I sit down to read in the afternoon, so many other things are going through my mind. I can't seem to sit still. I feel like running around in circles. <<<

-- I had an EXACT/identical problem, before the stabilization with the med. combo. This form of Bp is called a 'mixed episode.' In my case, started as a 'mixed episode' like yours, ... but after some 'stability' by the med. combo., it became 'rapid cycler.' Currently, with a fair amount of stabilization, I NEVER have those episodes. However, I do remember VERY well it was a hellish experience to go through. Then, I truly understand what an awful feelings you've been experiencing.

In my guess, ... a new A.D., Cymbalta has a small degree of seratonin property/efficacy(but, never like other SSRIs) that might be causing 'hypomania,' although it certainly helps the depressive side of your Bp. BTW, concentration problem is a part of a depressive side of Bp, ... a majority of Bper's have one.

In my suggestion, ... try to see how you feel with a miniscule dosage of Cymbalta. Any SSRIs, I can NOT tolerate due to either 'bad' S.E.s or aggrevation my Bp symptoms.
H.G.

Even though my mood is stable. But when I sit down to read the same thing happens to me. I think I forgot that it's okay to sit and read. The pdocs were so adamant about me not staying in the house due to agoraphobia, that now I can't stay at home. Fondly, Phillipa
