Non Seratonin Related Options?

Posted by anodyne on March 8, 2005, at 15:18:12

In response to a recent thread about loss of control some feel with SSRIs, I was hoping someone might have an idea. I have Social Phobia and have a feeling it could be related to my Seratonin system.

I say this because as someone who experimented with LSD years ago, I really didn't like the loss of control feeling it gave me and this is what almost every Seratonin based makes me feel like (to a lesser extent of course).

I have tried so many SSRIs (also Nardil and Efexor)and had to quit them all because I feel like I am having a mild LSD experience. This is also exactly what my anxiety feels like when it is really bad. This made me wonder if my anxiety was somehow realted to my Seratonin system being out of whack.

Does anyone know if there is an anti-anxiety meidcation that doesn't involve Seratonin (or works differently than other SSRIs) but is also non-stimulating (stims make me VERY anxious)? I have tried Wellbutrin and it did not make me feel this way but didn't do much for my anxiety either.

Benzos and AEDs (Keppra,Topamax,Nuerontin) work okay for me but I hate the sedation and or "dumb" factor. Klonopin works wonders but tends to make me feel down after a couple of months.

ANY ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

Have you tried many mood stabilizers.

I know you mentioned Depakote but maybe lowering the dosage would take away the "dumb" feeling.

I was just reading an article how Depakote is supposed to be a good option for anxiety as well.

I also have mostly anxiety/panic attack issues. I take a low dose Klonopin every day and I don't feel too dumb (well, I'm already a blonde from alabama so enough said about that).

Anyway, I haven't noticed any real cognitive delays- I can still remember where I left my shoes and such so I figure that's always a good sign.

LOL.

Have you tried Buspar?

Most of the mood stabalizers, with the exception of Keppra, made me really dumb, even at a low dose. Keppra worked well, for a while, then stopped working. I was hoping the new one, Lyrica, might hold some promise. I wonder if they will ever put it on the market.

I have a job the requires me to lots of thinking, so even a small impairment is not a wise career move. I nearly failed out of college while taking Depakote.

I actually find Klonopin to clear my thoughts. I guess with all that anxiety gone I can concentrate. Now if it only didn't make me tired and get the blahs, I would be set. A non-sedating benzo would certainly make a lot of other people happy!

Don't knock Alabama, I am a southerner at heart as well. I would move back to the warm weather in a heartbeat!

Take care,
Dan

For a while Lamictal helped with my anxiety, but the effect wore off for me...
