Very preliminary study, but as reported yesterday in Neuron, a two-probe implanted device completely eliminated depression in some completely treatment-resistant subjects. The electrodes were placed bilaterally in the subgenual cingulate, and electronically interfered with overstimulation of this limbic structure.
Here are some lay press reports:

I'll bet psycholgists are already planning studies to see if CBT + elect. brain stimulation is better than either alone! ;)

That will continue to be an eligibility criterion until the utility of the device is better established.

yeah - I saw a blurb on CBC last night - very early trials, but promising anyway, that alternatives to treating depression are being researched at all. One "test" guy was referred to as someone who "could not get out of bed" on his worst days before treatment - unless you've suffered depression, this doesn't describe accurately the level of despair...still a ways to go to get society as a whole to understand the need for cures...

When I emailed the URL to a psychotherapist I know she replied,
"Yes, I had read about this procedure. It seems to beg as many questions as it answers, but if it helps and isn't pharmaceutical - well, who knows. I would be most interested to know how many needs are met while they are undergoing the procedure."
I must say I don't follow her answer, but it sounds kind of intransigent and implacable.

What needs? I'm stumped.

This article makes me wonder if any drugs could be used to specifically target receptors in this subgenual cingulate area. An antagonist perhaps to curb the overstimulation in this brain region-which they postulate is playing a role depression.
This is the end of the thread.
